Like a Lost Pet

Characters: Miryene, Daigoro
Description: Miryene tells Daigoro that she has come to a decision... but it's not the decision Daigoro had hoped for.
Location: Vintner Hall
Date: month 9, day 8 of Turn 3

Daigoro knew Miryene had seen Ivenn. Fielton had been convinced that a visit from her former husband would help her move passed Jhonnel and make a fresh start. Her expression was unreadable, though, as he settled into the chair across from her.

Miryene met his eyes only briefly before staring down at her hands, which where folded on top of her stomach. "I've decided that since there has been no word of Jhonnel in over a month, I should acknowledge that he is probably not coming back."

The Hallsecond sighed gratefully. At least she had finally come to her senses. He nodded gravely. Though he was happy to hear that she was finally willing to let Jhonnel go, he was sad that it had to come to this.
He wanted above all else for Miryene to be happy. Hopefully, happiness is what she could find with Ivenn the second time around. "I will arrange for a harper to draw up the papers."

"While the harper is here, I'm hoping he could take care of something else, as well." Her voice sounded perfectly calm, but only the way she had her fingers clasped together hid their shaking.

Daigoro had been expecting this. But she didn't seem to happy about it, not that he could blame her really. "Oh?"

She glanced up at him. "Can we keep this between us, Daigoro? As... as friends?" "Of course," he nodded.

"I may not be ready to be married again so quickly, but I recognize that it is for the best." The words sounded unconvinced even to her... but she had no doubt that most people would agree that she was better off with a husband.

"Yes," Daigoro nodded solemnly, "I believe that is true. It would be best for the child to have a father, and I think for you to have a partner who will care for you." He tried to put the situation in as positive a light as possible. She may not be quite ready for this step after all that had happened, but Ivenn was a good man, and she would soon remember that, and perhaps even find love with him again.

Miryene sighed. "I know. That's why I accepted Jio's offer to care for my child and for me." The Hallsecond blinking a couple times in disbelief. "_Journeyman Jio's_
offer?"

She'd expected surprise, but there was something else in Daigoro's voice that she hadn't expected. "Is there a problem with that?" "Did Journeyman Jio give you an offer of marriage?" Daigoro could not hide the disdain in his voice. That sharding man just would not give it up, would he!

"For all of his supposed _fascination_, Jio was a perfect gentleman,"
Miryene replied coldly. "He never offered me anything but friendship, no matter what his personal feelings might have been. And I can think of no better recommendation in a partner than friendship." It irked the Hallsecond that she had a point. Still, he had very little respect for the journeyman. "Miryene, please do not rush into anything.
There is no reason to hurry any decision."

"A few moments ago you seemed all too happy to rush me." Miryene's eyes narrowed as she studied him, and for the first time the look wasn't very friendly. "You want to hand me back over to Ivenn like a lost pet, don't you." "I'd rather see you married to a good man, yes," Daigoro replied honestly, "not some boy who would chase married women around. You say his actions were honorable, but who's to say they would have stayed that way? Giving extravagant gifts to a married woman sounds a bit more than friendly to me, Miryene."

Miryene met Daigoro's eyes squarely. "If you're going to take the choice away from me, just say so, Master Daigoro. I have no choice but to accept whatever you and the Hallmaster might decide as my fate." "I would not take the choice from you, Miryene," Daigoro admitted begrudgingly. "But I sure wouldn't chose _that_ man for you."

"I have made my choice, if such a choice is allowed me." Miryene looked back down at her hands. "If it is not allowed me, then I will wed whoever you and the Hallmaster decide would be best." She knew that it was unkind to group him with Fielton in such a way, but his insinuations had upset her. "In any case, I'll await your decision. But I'd like to have this resolved before my child arrives, if possible. It seems it would be best." "All right," he mumbled as he stood to his feet. "All right, Miryene. You know I do not agree with your choice of husbands, but as it is _your_
choice... I will talk to Fielton."

The loss of their easy comfort with one another hurt, but she didn't know what she was supposed to say. As far as Miryene was concerned, _no_ man could be a worse choice than Jhonnel had been. Jio would have a lot to live up to if he wanted to destroy her life.
