Cyradis

Feeling rejected and disappointed, Ciendra walked away from the
Stands. She had not Impressed and was fighting the tears. She was not
going to cry.

She had to walk past all those new pairings, so happy. She saw a
familiar person. Lecordin, the assistant steward from Green Valley.
They had been Searched together. Of course he had Impressed, and a
bronze. She wasn't surprised, of course a man like him would Impress a
bronze. He was so handsome and had been kind to her. She snuck closer,
feeling shy. She wanted to congratulate him, but didn't want to
intrude. She didn't know many people at the Weyr yet.

**L'cor is my name now,** he thought to himself as he tried to keep
Tonuth from gorging. "chew the meat" he kept repeating out loud and
over their link. The whirling, trusting, loving, eyes pleaded with him
and it was all he could do to tear his gaze away as people came up to
congratulate him.

He looked up as he idly picked a small piece of shell from under one
of the wings he patted back onto the little bronze back.

"Ciendra?" Of course he saw immediately she hadn't impressed. "Are you alright?"

"Well, I didn't Impress..." Ciendra replied, trying to prevent her
lips trembling.
"But you did. I'm so happy for you!" she said with sincere voice.

His whole world was still filled with wonder at the little bronze next
to him but he couldn't fail to see her distress.

"Oh Ciendra," was all he could say. "You'll Stand again. Maybe next
time," he smiled encouragingly.

"Maybe," she sounded douptful. "What's his name?" she asked.

"He's Tonuth," L'cor smiled down at his little bronze. "And all he
wants to do right now is eat," he chuckled. Of course the others
around him all seemed to be of the same mind.

"He's handsome," Ciendra said.

"That he is," said a familiar voice.

"Mother," L'cor turned. "You came! I didnt' see you in the stands, But
there were so many people" He indicated the girl nearby, "You remember
Ciendra?" Then he smiled, "And this is Tonuth."

Corowal had had hard time to get thru the crowd to his son. When he
got there, he did notice the girl in a white robe and they way she
looked L'cor. Well, he was his son all right.
"L'cor!" he called.

L'cor turned again at his name to see his father coming through the
crowd. "Sir," he said with a big smile, trying to be circumspect with
the press of the crowd around them.

Corowal didn't care what everyone thought, he just gave L'cor a bear-hug.
"I'm so proud of you!"

Ciendra took an awed step back, her eyes large with surprise. She
recognized the Lord Holder, he had visited Red Rush hold after the
fire..the fire where her parents died. He had given a speech at the
funerals.

Dinalee knew Corowal hadn't seen her, his eyes fixed on his son, but the
pride sparkling in his eyes mirrored her own. "My Lord," she said
softly and stepped up next to her son. She knew anyone else would only
mark her a simple holder which of course she was.

N'vanik made his way through the crowd to find L'cor with a little
group of admirers, including the Lord Holder. He studied Corowal's
proud expression for a moment. "So, this is your son?"

"Yes, he is," Corowal replied. He did notice Dinalee, but with the
Weyrleader coming in, didn't get a chance to talk with her. He wanted
bit of privacy for that.

Ciendra had lived long enough in the Weyr to recognize the Weyrleader.
She was truly awed, and started to sneak off. She better change off
her white robe and go to see if her help was needed in the kitchen.

N'vanik turned to L'cor. "Congratulations, bronzerider."

Cyradis' arm snaked around the young girl candidate before she could
sneak away. "Ciendra isn't it," she asked. "I'm sure your lifemate
will find you next time. She kept her arm right there and added her
own congratulations to that of her Weyrleader's.

L'cor grinned and his hand found his little bronze lifemate. "Thank
you sir, ma'am," he said to the Weyrleaders. He couldn't overlook his
own mother at a time like this so he turned. to her. "This is my
mother, Dinalee." He was pretty certain they both knew Lord Corowal.

Ciendra stiffened up. She was over-whelmed. "Yes, ma'am," she nearly squeaked.

The Weyrleader nodded politely to Dinalee and told L'cor, "You made
your father so proud he acknowledged you in front of everyone. Has he
..." N'vanik hesitated and then just plunged on, "been a good father
to you before now?"

Corowal snorted. "Hardly," he muttered. "Dinalee brought him up all by herself."

"So you ignored your son? Let him grow up without a father?" It was a
sore spot for N'vanik. If he'd known about Cosani, he would have been
there for her.

"I didn't ignore him _completely_. I pay her support and I did visit
them when I could," Corowal replied. "I married another woman so it
was bit of a delicate situation."

Dinalee gasped and a hand rose to her mouth. It was like watching two
great bulls getting ready to have at each other. "My Lords... please."
She had never blamed Corowal for her situation or her son's. Her other
hand reached out to touch his arm. "Please," she pleaded.

L'cor didn't quite know what to think and his confusion translated to
Tonuth who cried out piteously. The new bronzerider turned and knelt
to put his arms around his little lifemate. **It's alright,** he tried
his best to project love and intense loyalty to flood the little guy and
reassure him that all would be well.

Cyradis dropped the arm she'd had around Ciendra and stepped closer to
N'vanik. "My Lords," she said softly and threaded her arm through her
Weyrleader's. She'd seen N'vanik when he was about to become...
difficult and this was not the time or the place. "I believe you can
continue this conversation later." she said as she pulled at his arm.
She looked up at him and then pointedly at the whirling distressed
eyes of the little bronze. "We have other Weyrlings to greet. I'm sure
we'll see you soon L'cor. Congratulations." Her eyes found the young
man and each of his parents in turn before returning to N'vanik. She
gave his arm another tug, Of course, she couldn't move him if he
wasn't willing to go.

Corowal was grateful of her interruption and gave her a gracious bow.
He had no idea why N'vanik was reacting so strongly but last thing he
wanted was a fist cuff with the Weyrleader.

"And we should probably leave L'cor to feed his dragon in peace," He
said, and offered his arm to Dinalee, "join me for the feast?" he
asked her.

Unnoticed, Ciendra slipped away.

N'vanik grudgingly went with Cyradis, but only because he didn't want
to upset the boy or his dragon. He shot a glare at Corowal to let him
know this wasn't over.

"Oh boy, that didn't go too well," Corowal murmured. Last thing he
wanted animosity between himself and N'vanik. "Congratulations and
good luck, L'cor. We'll see again before I head back home," he said to
his son.

Tonuth had settled back to eating, so L'cor stood and looked back and
forth between his parents with shining eyes. "Thank you sir," he said.
"I'd like that."

Dinalee's eyes were a little misty as she let the love of her life
lead her away from their son and his brand new lifemate.
