"Trust me, when you're a kid, there's nothing more fun than riding a
sled down those hills." He traced a finger down the slope of her
shoulder blade in emphasis. "And building snowmen, and having snowball
fights in little fortified snow Holds. Kaiavin will love it."
Tavia shivered at the light touch and chuckled at the reaction.
"Sounds like you have more than a little experience with those snow
Holds. Was the climate like that where you grew up?"
"I've only ever known Dragonfalls climate. I could never imagine living
somewhere like here where you can't see the summer heat fade into autumn
colors. And then to see the leaves fall to the ground and be covered in
a thick blanket of snow. And just when you think you'll go crazy if
another flake falls, the first flowers of spring start to peak through,
and you start to dream of summer once more." The love and pride U'kaiah
had in his home could easily be heard in his voice. "You can't truly
appreciate the warm days if you've never been without them."
"Hmm. I've never lived in that kind of weather. I've always been here
and except for the hurricanes, I love it." She could see how he loved
the climate at Dragonsfall though. "May take me a little getting used
to."
"Well, I'll keep you warm when the snow falls," he promised. U'kaiah
was sure she would not miss the hurricanes. "You'll love the spring
flowers."
"Promise? 'Cuz if my feet get cold at night I'll warm them up on you."
"I'm rather fond of your feet, cold or not," he said, leaning down to
kiss her shoulder blades. "Of course, we have to remember, I won't be
there every night." U'kaiah wanted there to be no false hopes or
misunderstandings about the reality of their situation.
"Well thank goodness for that," she quipped back. "Who would want you
under foot all the time." Tavia wasn't pining for a weyrmate, she was
still a free spirit and if she felt like sharing bodies with someone
other than U'kaiah it wouldn't do to have him there all the time. As
it was, she imagined her queue of willing partners would conceivably
diminish until she had a chance to establish herself there at
Dragonsfall and get them past any notion that she 'belonged' to the
Wingleader.
He didn't know those words stung slightly. "Come on, I wouldn't be
_that_ bad," U'kaiah said, covering it with a chuckle. Did she really
not want him around sometimes?
She chuckled, patted his chest and cuddled closer. "Well, just think
of all the fun we will have when you _are_ there. We'll be able to see
each other much more often than we can now. Isn't that what you want?"
"Well, no, not exactly," he admitted, putting his arms around her. "I'm
not looking for 'fun' with you, Tavia. And I don't want to just see you
more often. I want you to be closer because I want to _be_ with you.
Everyday, or as close to it as we can. Maybe not every night, but at
least lunch or breakfast, or checking in sometime during the day. And
not just you, but Kaiavin, too. You know, more like... family."
U'kaiah wondered if he had not made that clear when he had asked her.
Was that not what she had wanted, too?
"Trust me U'kaiah, if anyone in this room knows what family is like,
it's me." Honestly she thought he had some odd expectations at times,
or maybe 'family' was a foreign concept he'd have to learn. But he was
a quick study, she didn't doubt that. "It's fun," she leaned up on her
elbow so she could look down into his face and smile softly. "I grew
up with my parents right there... every night. My da let me ride him
around on the floor like a runner sometimes while my ma made our
dinner. We'd sit at the dinner table and play word games." She knew
all of that had made her closer with her parents and it _had_ been
fun.
"We both have jobs in addition to the care of our lifemates. It just
makes sense to be closer to make that easier. But sometimes the only
time we'll be able to be together as a family, is at night."
"I never thought of family as fun," he admitted. "I thought you were
talking about sex." Sometimes he wondered if he and Tavia didn't just
have a completely different vocabulary for things. It was like he was
from the South and he was from the North. They just seemed to come from
two completely different worlds sometimes. The things she was talking
about were like out of a book, and nothing like his experience of the
world had been. His fun as a child had been when he left the rooms and
had the run of the Weyr. Sneaking up on the Queen to watch her eggs,
stealing bubblies, catching tunnelsnakes, peeking into Flight Rooms to
watch the couples lost in dragonlust. That had been his fun as a child.
Not playing with a mother or a father. "I just can't imagine what
you're talking about."
"Guess I was just a lucky child," she mused. "My parents loved me
_and_ each other. Not all families in the hold and hall do. Many
marriages are arranged and the partners can barely stand each other.
In the Weyr we aren't bound together, well except for the Weyrleaders.
We can be together as long as it makes sense for both of us." She
smiled again. "And sex _is_ fun with you."
She leaned over to give him a soft kiss. "But you're more than just
that."
He pulled her down for another, deeper kiss. "I don't want to think of
a time when this won't make sense." U'kaiah knew it was possible.
Every relationship he had up until this point taught him that there was
a beginning and an end. But he just did not want to believe it could
happen to them. Not yet.
"Mmmm," was all she answered at first. She didn't want to borrow
worries from the future but enjoy now while it was here. Right now
U'kaiah was here and that made things rosy like a beautiful sunset. "I
hope it always makes sense."
