"Curiosity got the better of you, did it?" Traelyn asked Almonteo with a knowing grin as he made his way up the stairs towards where she was sitting.
"How could I _resist_? I _am_ a Harper, you know." He gave her a broad smile as he sat down next to her. "It looks like a fair number."
"Thirty-six," she beamed, her gray eyes bright. "And Nyith says they will all be strong." Her tone went softer, deeper as she turned her loving gaze to her exhausted queen, who was surveying her clutch with glowing pride.
"Thirty-six? That's a fine clutch! Who knew thirty-six of those eggs could fit in that golden body." He shook his head in disbelief as he stared down on the glowing queen guarding her eggs.
"I'm sure that even more will fit one day," Trae grinned, her eyes caressing Nyith's form.
"And perhaps a _queen_ egg? Wouldn't _that_ be a special Hatching,"
Almonteo smiled. Watching her lifemate clutch must almost be as gratifying as seeing your _own_ children for the first time... almost.
"It would. And I have no doubt Nyith will one of these Turns," she smiled, crossing one leg over the other.
"You have an amazing role here, Traelyn. You and Nyith are assuring that there will always be dragons in the skies of Pern. How proud you must be to see this."
She looked at him. Shards, it really did ease some of the weight that had been on her shoulders to hear him say that. It really did. And she didn't realize how much of what she was feeling was reflecting in her eyes as she searched his. "I am proud, Almonteo," she replied softly. "I always am, when she clutches. But this time...it's different. This time, I know that the dragons that will hatch from these eggs will fill in more of the many gaps in our Wings. With this clutch, Nyith and I are helping in another way to bring our Weyr out of devestation. And it makes me proud to know it."
Almonteo smiled his understanding. He had heard the rumors, as no doubt she too had heard. "You are doing a fine job as Weyrwoman, Traelyn. Don't ever doubt that, my girl. The others will come around."
She gave him a faint smile and touched his hand in a gesture of thanks before looking back towards her dragon. Nyith had re-positioned herself yet again in the hot sands, her head resting on her forelegs, but her eyes were whirling, watchful. High above her Hasaarth crouched, watching over his mate and their clutch protectively.
