"The drills went well," one rider commented, patting U'fouinn on the
shoulder as he passed. "Amizth looks great in the air."
"Thank you," U'fouinn replied with a smile and nod as he removed his
riding gloves. Turning to Amizth he patted her leg. **You flew great
today, love.**
He made quick work of removing her harness and sending her off to eat
and relax. Turning he saw one of wingmates.
"Good drills today, D'ren," U'fouinn complimented the bronze rider.
"You too," the bronzerider said with a smile. It was so much easier to
smile these days. In leaving Dolphin Cove behind, he seemed to left
most of his pain behind, too.
"I'm starving, want to grab a bite to eat together?" U'fouinn asked.
He often ate with D'arvn, but their schedules were off this sevenday.
"Sure." Unlike before, D'ren now spent many of his meals in the
company of his wingmates or other people he'd met here.
"Come on then, I'm hungry," U'fouinn replied, leading the way to the
dining hall. When they got there he filled his plate with the various
offerings that had been prepared for them. With tray in hand, he
settled at one of the tables, waiting for D'ren to join him.
The bronzerider was right behind him, sliding into the seat across
from him. "So what are you doing for Turnover?"
"D'arvn and I haven't really discussed it yet. We may go to a Gather,
but it depends on where. Not all the Holds are as welcoming to the two
of us as the others." U'fouinn shrugged his shoulders. He could care
less if some holdfolk were opposed to his interest in other men.
U'fouinn wasn't ashamed of who he was in any way.
"You could go to one of the other Weyrs. Or stay here." D'ren had
considered going to Dolphin Cove to visit his few remaining friends
there, but ... he didn't want to dig up the past so soon. He finally
felt like he could be happy again.
"That's true. It might be nice to just _be_ somewhere different, and
the other Weyrs would be a good choice for that. Thanks for the
suggestion D'ren. I'll talk to D'arvn about it." U'fouinn replied. "So
what about you? What are your plans?"
"Staying here for Turn's End and visiting my family for Turn's
Beginning." D'ren was looking forward to spending the day with them.
"That sounds nice," U'fouinn replied. Truly D'arvn and U'das were his
main family, though he had many other cousins and relations through
his father, he didn't spend all that much time with them. "I enjoy the
festivities for Turn's End and Turn's Beginning. There's always
something exciting going on."
"And it's a nice break from duties," D'ren said with a smile.
"I agree," U'fouinn replied. "You know, D'ren. I must say, I'm glad
you came here. You fit in rather well with our riders. Not sure how
things were for you back at Dolphin Cove, but you're a great asset to
our wing for sure."
"Thanks." His smile brightened for a moment, then faded. "I lost a
friend to Thread there, and I just couldn't get past it. I thought a
transfer would help, and it did."
"That would have been hard," U'fouinn replied. "We've all lost some
people over these Turns. Each loss hits home in a different way. I've
been lucky of late and haven't lost anyone close to me." He _was_
truly glad for that fact.
D'ren nodded. "I felt responsible for him. He was so young. Only
fifteen, when J'darin lowered the age for wingriders. Not that I was
much older but ..." He shrugged.
U'fouinn gave a sympathetic look and reached out to pat D'ren's hand.
"That would have been _really_ hard on anyone. You can't blame
yourself. Things happen with Threadfall and we all know it.
"I know. People keep telling me that. I keep telling myself that."
D'ren sighed. "I finally feel like I'm getting my life back. I was in
a dark place for a long time."
"Well, if anything like that ever happens again, know that you've got
friends here who will look out for you and help to pull you back from
such a dark place," U'fouinn meant every word he said.
"Thank you." His other friends had tried, but he didn't want to point
that out. "I came here to start over, and it's worked out pretty well
so far."
U'fouinn nodded, "Sometimes all we need is a chance to start anew."
