The impossible becomes a certainty!

Characters: D'ret
Description: The impossible finally happens … Daret Impresses
Location: Dragonsfall Weyr
Date: month 13, day 24 of Turn 6
Notes: Mentioned: Teseada, K'ale, Jykri, Paetri

The candidates were always at the ready for an imminent Hatching but
one wasn't ever truly prepared. Daret was going about his usual routine so
when the humming started and people began running around, he was almost
numb. This was it. Either he would be a rider today or he'd be on his way
to the Weaver Hall.

The thought nearly killed him. To never see Jykri again … pushing the
thought away, he threw on his robe, slipped into his boots and ran to meet
the other candidates.

Waiting for Teseada and K'ale, Daret had time to grin at his fellow
candidates, encouraging the new ones and commiserating with the old ones,
like him. He glanced quickly up in to the stands but didn't see his father
and a little piece of his heart cringed. How could he miss this?! Before
he knew it, it was time to head onto the Sands and he bit the inside of his
cheek as the heat radiated up his legs.

All else was forgotten as the first small egg began to rock. He held his
breath with the hope that it was a pretty little green but knew
that wasn't what the leadership wanted. Unfortunately, he also knew that
there wouldn't be many, if any, of the bronze and browns. That a blue
emerged made him smile and relax a little since he knew deep inside that a
blue would never want him.

He'd almost moved on to the next egg when he noticed that the blue went
straight to his best friend. "Yes! Congrats Jykri," he yelled out and
jumped for joy.

So engrossed in watching the new pair, he missed the Impression of the
brown and turned just as the first green made an appearance. His heart
stopped, she was gorgeous and inwardly he chanted for her to come to him.
That she went directly to another nearly made him cry.

Of course, he didn't have time to mourn as another green, smaller than the
first, made her presence known. He found it odd that all of them so far
were small but he didn't dwell on it as he watched the new green head
straight to Paetri. Again, he jumped for joy and called out, "Congrats,
Paetri!" That would be an interesting pairing and only a small part
worried that Jykri and Paetri would indeed live together when their dragons
were full grown.

As the eggs continued to crack, Daret's hope dwindled and he tried his very
best not to show it. They were down to two and it took everything in him
not to burst into tears as one of the remaining eggs hatched a brown. So
sure that he wasn't going to Impress that he stopped watching and stared at
the ground.

}: Is it safe to come out now? :{ came a soft little voice that sounded
incredibly scared.

"Wha …?" Daret looked around to see if one of the candidates spoke to him
but there was no one near him.

}: It's been ever so loud but there's a chill now and I'm hungry :{ As
frightened as she was, she was curious to know what her clutchmates were
doing but not enough to actually come out. }: Will it always be so loud? :{

"Sometimes," he said then blushed when one lad turned back to look at him
funny. Turning back towards the eggs, Daret gasped as a tiny little green
finally stepped out of her shell. Her pale color was that of the roots of
fresh grown grass and her dainty little head was the perfect shape as she
turned and gazed into his eyes. **Shells little one, it is certainly
safe.**

Taking a tentative step towards him, she bespoke }: I am Petrith :{ The
little green then squealed and curled up when the crowd burst into
applause. }: What is that?! :{

Daret, now D'ret, gaped at the green and looked at the weyrlingmasters for
some help. One motioned for him to go to her and like a dimglow, he simply
stared before finally heading over. **Now, now, Petrith, that's just the
people being happy that you're here. You're happy to be here, aren't you?**

}: I'd be happier with something in my … what is this thing that's sounding
so weird :{ she asked as she poked her belly with her snout.

D'ret wrapped his arm around the little green and lifted her head up to
look at him. "It's your belly and we can get meat in there if you'll come
with me. You will, won't you?" he asked with bated breath. Why he thought
she was only tricking him was beyond him but he'd waited … so … long.

}: Of course! You're mine and only you can protect me :{ Her love crashed
over him completely and D'ret was gently nudged in the direction of the
food tables. He was so engrossed in his beautiful lifemate and her fear of
absolutely everything new that he'd forgotten about being worried that he'd
been about to leave the Weyr.
