As the humming began, Paetri found her heart in her throat and
an anxious quiver in her hands. Bustled into the hatching ground
with the other candidates, she found herself shifting from foot to
foot to ease the soles from the burning heat of the sands. She
took a deep breath and closed her eyes, trying to calm her nerves.
It would not do to become a quivering mess right before the
hatching, and though her stomach quailed and threatened to
disgorge the meager contents of her stomach, she swallowed it
down. She gave a tremulous smile to both Jyrki and Daret,
wrapping her arms around herself as she waited. This was the
worst part. The waiting.

Her eyes searched the Stands, though she knew her family wasn't
there. T'sin was up North and it was far too late to have him
summoned. And her parents… She sighed. They wouldn't come
unless there was a queen egg on the sands; they expected her to
Stand for that, not for a small clutch such as this. She shook the
thoughts away and turned her attention to the rocking eggs.

The first egg cracking made her jump, her nerves taut and as she
hugged herself, she couldn't help but watch as the little blue
emerged. Her eyes followed it as it went straight to Jykri and her
eyes lit up. He had done it! She cast him a smile, mouthing a silent
congratulations to him. Another egg popped open with a sharp
crack and as the green emerged, Paetri held her breath, only to
release it as the green made a beeline for a tall young man.
Her shoulders slumped slightly and turned back to the eggs.

There was a shuffle then another little crack and Paetri blinked
as the tiny little green shook off the egg shell with a flourish. }
: I have …..arrived! :{ Little dainty wings spread and the little dragon
seemed to prance her way onto the sands. }:Now, where is she?:{
Paetri's eyes widened as she took a sharp breath and a hesitant step
forward. }:There you are! See me now? Over here! I am Camilth and
I am hungry and oh…I have an audience!:{ She stopped to preen for a
moment, moving little head to stare up at the applauding crowd.
}: They're certainly glad to see me, aren't they?:{

The slender candidate rushed forward, a disbelieving look on her face;
as she fell to her knees in front of the little green, the searing heat
forgotten, she touched the delicate little head and a look of wonder
suffused her expression. With a sudden sob of joy, she scooped up
the little green in her arms, not caring about the weight. It didn't
matter. Nothing mattered except that Camilth had found her. "My
little beauty.."

}: Yes. I am. :{ Camilth nuzzled her damp cheek. }: Can I eat now?:{

Glowing with a smile that had never been seen on her face before,
Paetri nodded. "Yes. Right now." The joy filling her entire frame
couldn't have been measured and she paid scarce attention to
anyone else as she headed towards the food, Camilth in tow.
She had done it!
