The Weyrlingmasters Meet

Description: The new Weyrlingmaster 2nd meets with the Weyrlingmaster
Location: Dolphin Cove Weyr
Date: month 13, day 5 of Turn 6
Notes: Mentioned: N'vanik, E'ril

D'naz whistled a bit as he made his way to find Sh'del. He'd known the
other rider for many Turns, but hadn't expected to have things work
out they way they just had. Taking the spot of Weyrlingmaster Second
was not something D'naz had ever discussed with Sh'del, seeing as he
_had_ a perfectly good Second up until a short time ago.

"Well, hopefully he won't be too put off by the news," D'naz mumbled
to himself as he made his way to Sh'del's office. After all things had
moved quickly during his meeting with N'vanik, and now he was the new
Weyrlingmaster Second.

Seeing the door open, D'naz poked his head in, "Knock, knock," he
said, his tone light.

A grumble of 'come in' reached his ears. And then the bright squeak of
Trouble, Sh'del's tiny green flit.

He entered and moved towards the other man.

"Good day," D'naz greeted the Weyrlingmaster. They hadn't really spent
much time together in the past, but they were familiar with each
other. He wondered if Sh'del had already heard the news and what his
reaction would be.

"Heya D'naz, what can I do you for?" Though Sh'del had a firm idea
what the bluerider was here for, he was peeved enough by E'ril leaving
to be unhelpful.

He wasn't sure if Sh'del knew or not, and not a man to beat around the
bush, D'naz began, "I don't know if you know or not, but I've been
assigned as the new Weyrlingmaster Second. It was a bit of a
surprising twist, to be honest, else I would have tried to speak with
you sooner. I'd heard the Third was open and went to talk to N'vanik
and the next thing I knew I was being promoted to Second." He wasn't
even sure why the position had opened up so suddenly, but regardless
D'naz was pleased with his own promotion.

Sh'del sat back and blew out slowly through his lips. "Shells man,
that must be about the fastest N'vanik has_ever_worked!" Damn, but he
owed his mate a pint for that. "When d'you start? This afternoon?'

"Aye, apparently," D'naz replied, chuckling a bit at Sh'del's words.
"I was rather surprised myself, but he seemed inclined to making sure
we were fully staffed so we could fill the ranks with the weyrlings
sooner rather than later and hopefully not lose too many straight
away."

"We never lose any." Unconsciously Sh'del stiffened at the comment.
"The last loss was under that old fat bastard from before...now what
was his name again?"

"I'd like to hope I can keep it that way," D'naz replied with a smile.
"I'm anxious to begin. I know as Second it's my duty to work with the
youngest weyrlings and help you with the senior ones when you need me.
Let me know what if, anything, more I should make sure I do. I'll go
around and meet with all the new weyrlings seeing as how I'll be
working closely with them for the next months." He was rambling a bit,
but wanted to make sure his duties were clear.

"Yeah, no problem." Sh'del was aware of his more causal--or perhaps
more sloppy--approach and look to the bluerider's but he was tired and
past caring. The loss of E'ril had hit him hard. "If you wish, the
little ones are about to start their class soon, you can jump right
in."

"Okay then," D'naz could say that he'd had warmer responses with other
wingleaders he'd worked with, but at least the meeting hadn't gone
poorly as well. Over time, he figured Sh'del would come to terms with
whatever was irking him about the new posting.

"I'll do that then. Best to get to know them as soon as possible,
anyway." With those words D'naz headed out and made for the main
classroom to meet with his new pupils.
