You're Working For Me Now

Writers: Ames, Paula
Date Posted: 17th June 2013

Characters: H'vack, U'das
Description: U'das speaks with the Weyrlingmaster about joining his staff
Location: River Bluff Weyr
Date: month 1, day 3 of Turn 7
Notes: Mentioned: K'sedel

H'vack sat at his desk looking through the hides left for him to

examine. There were many records of previous Turns that he was
familiarizing himself with, as well as information on all the current
candidates and current weyrlings in the Weyr. He was a man who
preferred knowing as much as possible about things to avoid any issues
that might arise.

He glanced at the message he'd received earlier that morning. U'das,
one of the wingleaders, had requested a meeting with him. The letter
didn't indicate much more than that, which left H'vack rather curious.
He hadn't actually interacted much with wingleader since he'd arrived.
**This should be interesting,** he thought as he set the note aside
and continued perusing the records while he waited.

U'das was curious to meet his new boss, and still rather bewildered by
the change. He was no longer a Wingleader, having given away his knots
to K'sedel. What was he now? Semi-retired? Weyling Staff's assitant?
He was probably going to be older and more experienced that the new
Weyrlingmaster, would the be able to work together? Could he restrain
himself and not start giving unwanted advice?
All those thoughts were chasing each other in his mind when he knocked the
door.

"Come in," H'vack called out, assuming it was U'das. He waited for the
other man to open the door and added, "Come in, have a seat. I've been
curious about this meeting."

"Hello, H'vack. Nice to meet you," U'das greeted and took the seat.
"So am I," he said. His shoulders felt strangely light without the
Wingleader's knots.

H'vack looked the Wingleader over. He noticed immediately that he
wasn't wearing his knots. H'vack's eyes closed a bit as he recalled
some rumors he'd heard as soon as he'd arrived. Something about U'das
stepping down? Wasn't it? He really needed to learn more about the
workings of this Weyr and the people, especially the people.

"It's a pleasure for me as well," H'vack replied, all business as
usual. "I received your message that you wanted to meet with me
straight away and that it was a matter of utmost importance?" He ended
the last with his voice showing a question. He was curious what all
was happening and was waiting for U'das to enlighten him.

"Well," U'das replied and his hand stroked the scarring on his scalp,
an automatic gesture. "This isn't exactly simple and I know it comes
sudden, you just barely gotten into your office.." he realised he was
beating around the bush and decided to go straight to it. "I'm
reporting in as your new underling. I had to step down from
Wingleader's position due failing eyesight. I still have enough vision
to teach the weyrlings, so here I am." He gave a lopside grin.
"K'sedel's handled the official hidework but you and I need to agree
what exactly my duties will be."

H'vack simply sat back in his chair and blinked at the older man for
quite some time.

"You will be working _under_ me?" He asked sounding a bit incredulous.
He had received some note about a new person being added to his staff,
but had just brushed it aside with the thousands of other notes he
figured didn't need immediate attention. Now he'd wished he'd read it
more closely and made a point to find it as soon as this meeting was
over.

"Well, I cannot say that displeases me. You have quite the reputation
U'das for leading a wing through a Fall. You will be a great asset to
the training of the weyrlings with or _without_ your eyesight." H'vack
truly did honor the man. The tales of his battles against Thread has
stretched throughout all the Weyrs. He had led his wing well.

"Well, perhaps it would be best if you told me where you think we can
best use your strengths without there being an injury to you, your
dragon or the weyrlings?" H'vack, though admiring of the man's
talents, knew that first and foremost he _had_ to put the safety of
the Weyr and all in it above and beyond the pride of one rider.

"Well, let's say I've better stick to the ground. I've used Zack's eyes,
but frankly, dragon's vision is so different it's disorienting," U'das
replied. "I can teach theory, visialization and ground drills." His
background as Weyrlimaster too, was showing through.

H'vack nodded, "Those areas are always in need of extra hands and help. We
will be glad to have you onboard. I know your experience will only add to
the strength of our weyrlings." He was watching the older man closely.
H'vack leaned forward across the desk. "But, if at any time, you feel that
things are _not_ working out or if you need one of us to take over, do
_not_ hesitate. You know as well as I we cannot take any unnecessary
risks." He waited for a moment to make sure his message was clear.

"When do you start?"

"Whenever you want me to. The sooner the better, actually. I don't stand
sitting idle very well," U'das replied.

"Great," H'vack replied. "We've got the candidates preparing for the
upcoming Hatching. They are due here in the next candlemark. We're working
on preparations for Hatching, expectations, etiquette, all that stuff,"
H'vack waved his hand to indicate a variety of things.

"Why don't you start to get to know them now? Take this class, walk them
through the basics of what they need to know for the Hatching, as well as
instill in them the need to _listen_ and _follow_ their Wingleader and
Weyrleader. I _know_ you can help them see how important _that_ skill is."
H'vack gave an almost eager smile at that. He knew U'das could put anyone
in their place if need be, else he'd never have made Wingleader in the
first place. Best to show the candidates who was boss from the get go.
"What do you say?"

"Sounds good to me," U'das replied. H'vack seemed like easy to get a long
with, at least from his point of view. Weyrlings and candidates might
disagree. U'das could easily follow the Weyrlingmaster's reasoning and
agreed with it.

H'vack gave a slow smile at U'das's reply. He definitely liked the former
Wingleader. If he was this easy to work with, H'vack knew they would get
along just fine.
