Arippa or Faldrimme

Faldrimme

"Whoa, new girl." Evoni leaned on the shovel and gave the girl who
just entered stables a good, long once over. She shoved her free hand
upon her hip and opened up a wide smile. "Hey there."

"Hello," Faldrimme replied, trying to sound more confident than she
felt. She's had some time to settle in, but was still reeling from the
sheer differences between Amber Hills and River Bluff.

"I'm Faldrimme," she introduced herself to the other girl. She'd
already talked with the man in charge and been told she could start
right away. It was exciting to actually be able to _work_ in the craft
she'd longed for for so long.

"I'm Evoni, nice to meetcha." The dark girl held out her hand to the
newcomer. "Where you from, Faldrimme? Your accent isn't from around
here."

"You're right. I'm not from around here. I'm from Amber Hills
actually," Faldrimme moved into the stables and hoisted a shovel of
her own. "I believe I'm to help you." She'd mucked out her own stables
before, but not often. She'd gotten yelled at for doing the task as it
didn't befit a lady of her station.

"Well come on in and get shoveling. We've got a lot to do." While it
was an order, it was in a tone that was friendly. Evoni certainly
wasn't going to leave Faldrimme to do it on her own. She took her own
shovel and hefted a large pile from the floor into the wheelbarrow
that stood waiting. "So were you Searched or something?"

"No," Faldrimme replied, wondering how much of her family history to
reveal. "I wanted to craft and I couldn't do that in the Hold. I came
here to learn what it was like to craft." **No need to tell more than
I need to right now,** she mused. She was worried people would treat
her differently if they knew she was Lord Benaroy's granddaughter.

"They don't let girls do much in holds." Evoni wrinkled her nose but
it wasn't in response to the odor that came from the piles they were
mucking. "Good thing you came here, you'll be able to do whatever you
want here. I doubt you'll ever want to go back to Hold life!"

"I'm not sure yet. I mean, I know I want to craft, but my family said
I can come home again if I change my mind," Faldrimme was still having
a hard time accepting the idea of _not_ living at the Hold with her
family. Arippa had moved on, to another Hold, but she'd been able to
let go. Maybe it was time for Faldrimme to do the same.

"Girl, you got it better than most from Holds. Lots of girls come
here but they have no where else to go because their families would
kill them or sell them off to the highest bidder. Here, they're free.
So are you." Evoni leveled her gaze at Faldrimme. "Nice to have the
option, but I bet you'll like it here."

"That doesn't sound so bad. I mean, I don't want to not be able to
follow my dreams just because I'm a woman at a Hold. But I know things
here at the Weyr are _very_ different." Faldrimme hadn't experienced
any of it yet, but she wasn't sure if she could handle the different
way of life long term.

"Oh sure, there are lots of things different, but they're all for the
better in my opinion." Evoni shrugged. "Tell you what, how about I
show you around after we're done for the day?"

"Alright, that would be nice," Faldrimme replied, wondering how she'd
manage to ditch her chaperone for a bit. It would be awkward to have
Planar walking with them. Maybe she could talk to the older woman on a
break and ask her to hang back quite a bit. She could still come
along, so to speak, and not go against her father's wishes, but Evoni
wouldn't know what was going on.

"So did you come here from a Hold as well?" Faldrimme asked as they
continued to much out the smelly stables. She had to admit, this
_wasn't_ the best part of the craft and not what she'd hoped to be
doing, but she had to start somewhere.

"Nope, but I've visited. Don't care to stay too long though. My
cousins have no problem with it, but I do!" Evoni shook her head.
"Not my sort of place. You should see the attitude and looks I get!"

"What do you mean?" Faldrimme asked, pausing in her work to look at
the other girl. Sure she looked rough around the edges, but not all
that different from the regular workers at the Hold. Of course, most
of those workers were men, not women.

"Oh I'm a threat to their daughters. I might give them 'ideas'."
Evoni's eye widened and she lifted a hand and formed a claw with one
hand, as if she were about to pounce. "And really, I don't like being
alone with the way some men look at me."

Faldrimme still wasn't quite sure she understood all that the other
girl was saying, but she decided not to press the matter in case she
looked foolish. "I see," was all she said in reply, then decided to
change the subject. "So how long have you been a beastcrafter here?"

"Four turns. I started as soon as I could." Evoni heaved one last
pile into the wheelbarrow. "If we get it any fuller, we won't be able
to move it. I'll dump this and be back."

Faldrimme nodded and watched the other girl pull the cart away. **I'm
going to get strong here, that's for sure. This is a lot more work than

I'm used to.** She knew it wouldn't all be the easy stuff, but she
hadn't realized just how _hard_ she was going to have to work to start
her craft.

Evoni returned fairly quickly. Unlike Faldrimme, she was used to the
sort of work. "All right girl, let's finish up here - then we have
several more stalls. After that, the real work begins."

"The real work?" She asked, "what's next?" She was already feeling the
strain on her muscles and wondered what their next task would be. The
journeyman had told her to follow the other girl's lead as she learned
the ropes.
