Once the rest of the Weyr was settled down at the trestle tables in
the Dining Cavern, Rhosyn looked over at K'sedel for a moment before
she stood up and got in front of the dais. After the Hatching, she
knew good and well people were talking and it might as well be said
since some knew already and it was also getting obvious. Unlike a
normal dragonrider, as the Weyrwoman, her life was on display and
she understood this, as well as the need to let the Weyrfolk
know everything was just fine and normal. It had been a long day for
some since they had been preparing for tomorrow's Threadfall all day.
Calling for quiet, she waited until all eyes were on her. "People
of River Bluff-I'd just like to say that I am very proud of all
of you. Despite my recent illness during Turnover and again at the
Hatching, everyone managed to make both events wonderful. This Weyr
has pulled together to fill in the gaps, my Headwoman and Wingsecond
included." She gave a smile to both Lenala and Solieira. "Without
everyone's help and hard work, this place would not run so smoothly.
And the time is coming when I will need more of that help. You see, I
am going to have my first child and he or she will be raised here, as
this is my home and you are my people."
Hazel eyes looked over the crowd, judging the reactions of people she
knew. "I thank you all for your love and understanding as well as generous
support." Nodding her head to say she was finished, Rhosyn gave a small
smile before sitting carefully back down at the table.
Briata cast a glance over at Y'gel, her mouth quirking a bit. To be
honest, she thought this was a bit...well, over dramatic for the
announcement of the baby, but at least the Weyrwoman was no longer in
denial.
H'vack, who'd been eager to dive into his meal, looked up when she
addressed them. **Another future rider to train,** was his main
thought following Rhosyn's announcement. Babies and all were not
his thing. He'd never like the tiny things. Once they got older,
now that's when he could understand them. He had a few of his own
running amok back at his old Weyr. He'd stayed clear of them when they
were tiny. Just too darn delicate for him.
Y'gel grinned at Briata's 'I told you so' look and just shook his
head, then went back to eating his dinner. Rhosyn was... well...
Rhosyn. He doubted he'd every meet another person quite like her.
Lenala was just sitting in her place, a smile plastered to her face. She
already knew it, thanks to being Rhosyn's Second. It meant more work to her
and she didn't like that.
U'das lifted his mug to the air. "Congratulations, I'll drink to your
health." "Me too," Tamah agreed and touched his mug with U'das'.
Uetia nudged Sabonus. "Did you hear that?" she whispered. "Rhosyn with a
baby?"
Reeva's lips quirked at the intrinsic drama of the announcement, but
said nothing.
S'yei had _just_ stood from his table to leave when Rhosyn stood up and
signaled for everyone's attention. With a frown of confusion, S'yei had
sat back down, his eyes riveted on the woman in the front.
**This must be important for her to draw an impromptu meeting like
this.** He had thought, until he _heard_ the actual "announcement."
Looks of disbelief passed around be cavern, S'yei could see it in the
faces of the other Weyrfolk.
With a snort, S'yei stood up again and made for the exit. What was
Rhosyn thinking? This was the _Weyr_ for Faranth's sake! Women got
pregnant and had babies _everyday_! It wasn't as if the Weyr were a
Hold and dependent upon an heir. As far as S'yei was concerned, the
Weyrwoman's child would be just like any other brat in the creche.
Greenriders didn't receive special treatment and "help" as Rhosyn
was requesting. In S'yei's opinion, if the Weyrwoman couldn't take care of
her duties because she was pregnant then her Second should step up and
take her place.
Ty'tha, however, who had been S'yei's table mate during the
announcement, didn't quite understand the bluerider's obvious
annoyance. Ty'tha raised his mug with the rest of those congratulating their
Weyrwoman.
Im're didn't understand what the fuss was about. Women got babies all
the time.
