Description: Chupsin and Taren confer about Lady Yanley.
Location: Amber Hills Hold
Date: month 2, day 3 of Turn 7
Notes: Mentioned: Yanley, Zelanka
Taren dismounted the dragon who had given him a rider to Amber Hills Hold.
"I'll send a word when I need the ride back," he told the young bluerider
and patted Aes. He took his medical bag when the rider handed it down to
him. He didn't really need it, this wasn't a medical emergency, more like
social visit. He turned to look the Hold. It didn't hurt a Weyrhealer to
know the Holds under the Weyr's protection. And more importantly, know the
healers in those Holds. There weren't that many Master Surgeons, so Taren
knew he could get a call for his specialty from anywhere. He strode onwards
with purposeful steps. Few friendly questions later a drudge guided him to
the hold's infirmary. He knocked.
An apprentice answered and seeing the knots, figured this was the man they
were expecting. Leading him into Chupsin's office, he explained the Senior
Journeyman would be with him shortly. Some farmer had severed a finger and
it should be a few moments. "Do you want anything to eat or drink Master?"
And then the apprentice disappeared. The office was very neatly kept and it
was clear the healer that occupied it was fastidious. However, the
furnishings inside were also very comfortable and showed a sense of taste
and comfort, but also a style that was very Amber Hills. This was Chupsin's
home and he had come back to it proudly.
When he heard about the severed finger, Taren's interest perked up. Perhaps
he could offer his help. On the other hand, he was guest and that would be
seen intrusive. He asked the apprentice for klah and looked around. He
liked what he saw. Neatness was a good quality in a healer.
Chupsin finished and then cleaned up before returning to his office. The
apprentice had already brought the klah and disappeared. "Good afternoon
Master. I thank you for coming." Taking off his healer's robes and hanging
them, he sat down in front of Taren picking up a mug that had been left for
him and taking a drink. "Is the brew to your liking?" In other words, has
our hospitality been well enough?
"It's fine, thank you," Taren replied with an easy smile. "So, we have a
common patient now?"
"It seems so. Lady Yanley will be at your Weyr soon enough. She is pregnant
with a dragonrider's child and will be going with him." Chupsin kept to the
facts in the situation. "I have provided all of her prenatal care from the
day we knew up till now. She is leaving her home and everything she knows
behind, but has requested for me to be there at the Weyr to facilitate the
birthing." He was quiet then as he awaited the Master's response.
Taren just nodded. "Can I have a copy of her medical records? Does she have
any particular problems? I'm not a midwife, so I'll be happy to let you
handle the birth. Of course, we do have healers specialized in midwifery
too, but if she wants you, I'm willing to let her have her way."
Chupsin wasn't a midwife either. Yanley had been his, but he didn't mention
that. If she wanted Taren to take advantage of her services later, then she
could bring it up to him. "I've made copies for you. I believe my
apprentice outside has them in a tied package. As far as problems, nothing
unusual. Morning sickness and she has a healthy appetite and weight gain.
However, it is her first child and she isn't a young woman so our headwoman
had been making sure she received extra nutrients in her diet."
"Yes, older bodies aren't as flexible and don't recover as easily as young
ones. I'll be standing ready, in case I'm needed. I've done few surgical
deliveries in my life," Taren said. Chupsin seemed to be well prepared. The
young man certainly showed a promise.
He really hoped that wouldn't be necessary, but understood. "When she gets
close, I may simply remain at the Weyr for a few days if that's fine to be
on hand. Is there a trained midwife to assist perhaps within your staff?"
"I can arrange a room for you. Yes, we have. Do you have preference? We
have both female and male midwife."
"I think the Lady would be more comfortable with a female," he said easily.
"All right," Taren said with neutral tone. "She's an elderly lower cavern
woman with plenty of experience."
"Sounds good then. I thank you for your cooperation in this. In the
meantime, she will of course be receiving care from your staff." Chupsin
trusted everything would be fine.''
"Of course. There's no reason why we can't cooperate," Taren said with a
small smile.
"Well, that takes care of that then. Did you have any business for me? If
not, midday meal awaits us." He had warned Zelanka about his guest so that
shouldn't be a problem.
"No, she was the all," Taren replied. "A lunch would be fine."
