After his duty shift, Karhal walked the short distance to Zelanka's
office; he had much to tell the woman. He rapped lightly on the door
and waited.
"Do help yourself in!" Zelanka called absent mindedly. Her finger was
following a row of numbers on a ledger while right hand was scribling
notes to a piece of hide.
Opening the door, Karhal stepped in, his smile slight. "If you
insist." He glanced down at the ledgers and was immediately
sympathetic. "I can come back if you're too busy."
"No, do sit down. I can use break anyway," Zelanka replied and
gestured towards a chair. She put the pen away and rubbed her
forehead. "I wish I had assitant who was good with numbers."
Karhal mused about that for a moment as he took a seat. "Hmm..my own
is invaluable, but I'm afraid Daimhin would drive you crazy within a
candlemark." He settled in his chair as an idea filtered in his mind.
"I may have an idea, but I don't know if she'd be interested."
"You know someone?" Zelanka asked hopefully.
He nodded. "Yes. And, I was coming to speak to you about her anyway."
He lifted his lip corners up and leaned forward. "Loella has a sharp
mind." He paused. "And I've asked her father for her hand."
"Loella? She's not part of my staff, so I don't know of her skills,"
Zelanka said. "Well, now! Congratulations," delighted smile spread to
her face when she heard the news.
He inclined his head. "Thank you. The wedding won't be for three more
months at least." He paused. "But I do think you should speak to
Loella." His voice softened. "As a favor for me, if you would. I would
have her be able to support herself. Just in case."
"I'll gladly talk with her," Zelankan promised. "Do you need help
arranging the wedding?"
Karhal held up his hands."I'm not even going near the planning. I know
better. I'd get the glares from both Loella and her mother if I tried
without them asking first. You'd have to ask them."
"Wise of you. I'll ask them," Zelanka said with a little laughter.
"I do have my moments." Karhal gave a slight smile. "Not many, but a few."
He sat back and rubbed his hand along his chin. "How have you been other
than over worked?"
"The same," she shrugged a bit, "Trying to keep my staff sushed up about
Lady Yanley." No one could mistake her condition now, she was too far along
to hide it. She was floating on a happy little, pink bubble now, and didn't
even hear the whispers around her. Zelanka tried do her best controlling
the damage and at least had curbed her staff of publicly slandering the
poor Lady.
He frowned. "I'll see what I can do to lessen them, but probably not much."
He didn't approve of the situation, but unless Zathris wanted him to
actually arrest Yanley or the dragonrider (which some people would have
wanted), he could do little. "But, she is happy. Sometimes..." He paused.
"..sometimes being happy is enough and you don't care about much else. Not
everyone gets that. You know it. I know it."
"Oh, yes, I do know," Zelanka sighed. "And sometimes love wins and you
just don't give a damn about the consequences."
"And we also know how consequences can catch up. It may not be today, it
may not even be this Turn, but it will happen." Karhal sighed. "Don't get
me wrong, Yanley seems a decent enough person, but she's of the Blood. She
has responsibilities to the Hold before herself. She failed in that."
"I'm not arguing with you on that," Zelanka said. "I love her like she was
my little sister. That doesn't mean I approve what she's done. I'm just
keeping my opinions to myself," she gave a rueful smile. "At least when
she's hearing it."
Brows hitched up. "Officially, I have no opinion." Karhal had no illusions
about his own position. He did what Zathris requested or ordered. His
personal beliefs rarely had anything to do with matters.
"Keep your nose out of their business?" Zelanka asked with wry smile.
That's what she tried to do. After all they were both just hired staff and
they could be replaced.
"It's usually the best way to keep myself out of trouble." He echoed her
smile. "Unless I have to, of course."
"Unless you have to," Zelanka echoed.
