K'ale

K'ale

K'ale stood when they were dismissed and started out of the room with
all the other riders but as he walked toward the door, circumstance
placed him right near Harki. "Hi there Harki," he said with a smile.
"Welcome back to Dragonsfall."

It took a moment to place him-- K'ale, a brownrider. He was new since
she'd left Azure Wing, and she was pretty sure he was related to
someone only she couldn't think of who. "Thanks. It's good to be
back."

He could tell she probably didn't recognize him but that wasn't a
surprise. She'd been ahead of him growing up in the pack of children
that ran around in the lower caverns making mischief. "Kendale," he
offered. "Kenza's son?"

"Right! Kenza's brat." She grinned and clapped him on the shoulder.
"You're lucky you turned out looking the way you do, with your
parents."

K'ale chuckled. "Right." His da was one of the more popular riders in
the Weyr at least with the female population and had no trouble
finding companionship but he was rather 'taken' at the moment and
didn't seem to make the rounds he once had. "Want to go grab a bite?"

She shrugged. "Sure, why not? You can tell me if the food's changed
since I left."

"Great," he smiled and trotted down the stairs toward the dining
cavern behind her. "I think we got a new baker since you left but most
of the food is still the same,"

"I can only hope at the baker's from Rising Moons. I might have to go
back there for cream puffs." She put a hand to her mouth. "I'm
drooling just thinking of them. That's the only thing I regret about
my transfer."

"Oh you'll have to meet my friend Cardella," K'ale smiled. "She used
to make _the best_ ones before she Impressed. Maybe we could talk her
into it sometime." Of course he and Cardella were a bit more than just
friends these days and he was quite happy with the arrangement.

Another former Baker, then, and one that had obviously learned more
than she had. "So when did you Impress?"

"Just under two Turns," he smiled. Of course she could tell from his
shoulder knots that Imalkyth was brown. But though his pride in his
lifemate was unbounded he didn't want to bring up the recent gold
flight win that resulted in an abysmal clutch on the sands. But he'd
been proud and happy when all seventeen eggs had hatched successfully.

By then they'd reached the line and he could see roast tubers with a
selection of meats and gravy. That was his kind of fare. "Oh look
ribs, cook makes the best sauce."

Harki made a face. "Chewing meat off the bone weirds me out. So catch
me up, K'ale. What's new at the Weyr."

"Well," he said as he grabbed a couple of the ribs for his plate along
with some mashed tubers and generous helping of steamed veggies. K'ale
didn't gossip all that often. He always seemed to be behind on the
news vine and everyone already knew when he found out. So, this time
he decided to make fun of himself. He leaned a little closer to her
after they found their seats.

"This young brown caught the junior gold. But you've probably heard
that part. There were only seventeen eggs. But they all hatched." He
lit up a moment later as he remembered something else. "It seems our
dear Wingleader U'kaiah has been visiting Dolphin Cove for over a Turn
and had a baby with a rider there. Seems he's gonna try and bring her
here where he already has a relationship with a greenrider and keep
them _both_."

"Pff. Old news. The tiny Clutch was what brought me here, and I heard
about Tavia from U'kaiah. He and I Impressed in the same Hatching."
Harki poked at her tubers suspiciously. "Whose brown caught Onnyth?"

K'ale closed his eyes and shook his head. Then he looked at her,
nodding with a wry smile said, "Yes, well that would be mine."

"_You_?!" Harki's eyes widened, then she began to laugh. K'ale was
barely out of weyrlinghood! "Of all the ridiculous things..."

"Gee thanks," he said with a smile. "Tell me about it. I honestly
don't know how it happened. He was just in the right place." Lucky
but not in a way others appreciated. "So why did you leave
Dragonsfall," he asked in an effort to change the subject.

That was one topic that Harki was not so keen on talking about. So
she didn't. "Just in the right place to botch the Flight, you mean.
The small Clutch brought me back, though. It was a good excuse to
return, so I _guess_ I should be thanking you."

"Yeah yeah," he said, and waved a hand at her. He'd already heard all
the jokes and they hadn't been funny in the first place. But when she
said she should thank him...

"Finally," he grinned at the greenrider. "Someone besides my parents."
