It was with some trepidation that K'sedel accompanied Ciara to the healers. The last time he had done this was many turns ago with Meree.
Then she found out that she was carrying Reesia and it was amazing. This time, well he just wasn't sure what would happen. Women could be mistaken about these things, he knew that much, but it seemed to mean so much to Ciara.
Only the healers could tell for sure.
She glanced at him out of the corner of her eye, wondering what he was thinking. Shards...the nervous fluttering in her stomach hadn't really gone away... Ciara wasn't sure how she'd expected him to react to what she'd told him, but...
"Thank you for coming with me, K'sedel," she murmured.
"It's the least I can do," he said, feeling that those words were not quite right, but knowing he had to say something.
Abrei was waiting for them in one of the private examination rooms, giving K'sedel and Ciara a little privacy. She smiled at both of them as she closed the door. "The apprentice told me that you think you might be pregnant."
Ciara nodded, smiling back. "I think I am."
Abrei nodded. "Then I have the standard questions first... how long has it been since your last cycle?"
"Since early month seven."
"And you've had other symptoms?" The standard questions were mostly formality, though Abrei never ceased to be amazed by how many girls in the Weyr didn't seem to know exactly how pregnancy worked.
Ciara nodded. She knew she was pregnant. She'd never been wrong before...
It didn't take long to go down the list, so Abrei moved onto the examination, making it as brief as possible. "Well, there's not much room for doubt, here. We'll be making you an appointment with one of our specialists for regular checkups on your pregnancy. Congratulations."
The greenrider's eyes lit with pleasure as she donned her clothes. "Thank you, Abrei." Her smile was wide as she came out into the waiting area, her eyes meeting K'sedel's.
Pregnant, she was pregnant. He couldn't deny a bit of surprise, shock, and then joy. After all, even if it was a surprise, children were a good thing in the long run. He held his arms open, bringing her close to him in an embrace.
Finally. _This_ was the reaction she had been looking for. She smiled against his shoulder as she tightly returned his embrace. "You're going to be a papa again," she murmured in his ear before she grinned and gently kissed his neck.
"Even if I am a bit old for it," he said softly.
