Description: Two greenriders talk a bit more
Location: Dragonsfall Weyr
Date: month 4, day 1 of Turn 7
Drills were over for Azure, and this one had been taxing. Throwing firestone
left Harki's shoulders and back aching, and a bruise forming on her knee
when she'd let a sack bump against her thigh. She was looking forward to
returning to her weyr for a soak in the bathing pool, and didn't notice that
they weren't heading in that direction until she and Cerillith were halfways
across the Weyr. **Where are you taking me?** Harki asked, bemused. **I'm
tired.**
}:I want to see the weyrlings! They are drilling.:{ Cerillith backwinged to
land neatly on the edge of the cliff overlooking the weyrlings' space. In
the air above, they were flying in clumsy formation. }:I want to see
Camilth.:{
**You're such a sucker for attention,** Harki said fondly. She patted her
dragon on the neck, while Cerillith's baritone rumble of annoyance vibrated
through her body.
It wasn't difficult to find Paetri and Camilth -- Camilth's size and bright
hide meant that she stood out between the wings of her clutchmates. Harki
watched them with her eyes narrowed against the sun. **Can you tell them to
come over when the Weyrlingmaster releases them?**
}:Cerillith's wants to meet us after we are done.:{ Camilth's tongue poked
out between her teeth as she concentrated on keeping behind another green,
wings pumping rhythmically to keep in her place.
**Why?** Paetri glanced around quickly at the other weyrlings, making sure
that they were where they were supposed to be. She did not want another
repeat of todays drills; it was difficult enough for Camilth being as small
as she was to keep up.
}: I dunno. But I think we're almost done. I'm tired. :{ Paetri gave consent
and as they finally landed, she listened to the review of how they had done
before they were released from the lesson and cleared to go back to the
barracks.
Camilth stretched out her wings and shook them slightly before flicking them
back over her spine. }: They are over there. They were watching us.:{ She
perked up at the thought of the attention and waited just long enough for
Paetri to remove her straps before ambling towards the larger green. }:
Hello Cerillith! Did you see me? Didn't I do good? :{
}:Yes, very nicely,:{ Cerillith replied, clearly enjoying being asked for
her opinion.
"Hey. Sorry. Cerillith wanted to come by to see you two," Harki called to
Paetri. "Well done with your drills."
Camilth, clearly already falling into hero-worship of the older green,
sidled up to Cerillith and peered up at her proudly, puffing up her narrow
chest. }: It makes me very tired, but I try very hard. I am very agile.:{
"It's not a problem." Paetri shook her head at the apology. "Camilth seems
to like her. Maybe she can learn some things from an older green." **Besides
diving at a break-neck speed, that is.** She removed her helmet and pushed
back mussed strands of dark hair. "Thank you. We're still learning,
obviously." She frowned a little. "It's a bit difficult for us, I guess.
She's the smallest one."
Harki waved her hand dismissively at the comment. "So are all greens,
comparatively speaking. Weyrlinghood is hard. Although... I'm not sure if
you noticed already, but Camilth flicks her tail a bit when she wheels left.
It's not affecting her agility at all, but it means she needs to work harder
to correct."
Turning to look at her green and then back at Harki, Paetri blinked. "She
does? I hadn't noticed." Her brow furrowed. "What does it mean? How is that
bad?"
"It's not bad, it just means she has to work a little harder-- the tail
flick pulls her a little off balance and she needs to correct. Flying green
is all about finding ways to make flying easier so they can stay in the air
longer." Harki slapped Cerillith's neck affectionately. "We have to use
every ounce of energy wisely, when those dumb browns can fly forever no
matter what they do."
"Oh." She nodded, suddenly understanding. "Well, how can I correct it, if I
can't see it? I have to constantly concentrate on who is beside and in front
of me." She tugged on her braid and then scratched her head. "I can't watch
her tail constantly."
"You'll learn to feel it," the older greenrider said. "But it's something to
think about."
Her brow furrowed deeper and she nodded. "I'll will. I want her to do her
best. They don't even think she'll be able to last half of a Fall because of
her size. She's got wonderful agility, just not the size for any good
stamina." She tugged at her braids. "Her Flights will be shorter too."
Harki shrugged. "She'll last half a Fall. Dragons just... do. She might not
at first, but as she grows into her wings she'll surprise you. And really...
who cares how fast a green gets caught? Unless Camilth's got a gold belly or
something, it means nothing."
"It doesn't?" It was interesting to hear things from another greenrider's
perspective and a female one's at that. "I thought it was best if they were
longer. Any flight, I mean."
"Well... you'll enjoy it more." Harki winked. "But that's about it. Anyway,
I should go wash my dragon, and you probably have things to do. Nice talking
to you, Paetri!"
"You too. Maybe we could talk some more later?" Talking to another
female greenrider was not only helpful, but she had so many questions
that she didn't always feel comfortable talking about with
weyrlingstaff.
"Sure. Why not? I'm around, come say hi anytime," Harki said,
surprising herself. **You're rubbing off on me,** she told Cerillith.
The green dragon snorted. }:I like Camilth.:{
**You like that she likes you.** The greenrider waved to the weyrling,
then told her dragon it was time for her bath. Cerillith stretched
from her wingtips to tail, then took off in a neat flurry of wings.
And Harki tried not to wonder if she was beginning to like Paetri for
the same reason.
