Genna was hardly ever nervous around important people. Back at Amber Hills she had never had any trouble talking to Lady Benani or even Lord Zathris. But today she was actually nervous. Clutching her searchtoken in her hand tightly, she checked her dress one more time before knocking politely on the door to Weyrwoman Second Teseada's office. She had done everything she could to look presentable, though she had soon noticed that being presentable at the Hold was something different to being so at the Weyr. She felt terribly overdressed amongst the crowd of practically dressed riders, candidates and workers.
"Come in," called out the young goldrider as she blotted her signature on another of the endless series of hides. "I'll be with you in a moment."
Genna complied instantly, shuffling into the office, but remaining silent as she waited for Teseada to finish whatever it was she was working on. As she waited, her eyes moved around the room discreetly, taking everything in with curiosity.
Teseada lifted her head to see a well dressed young woman, almost certainly holdbred from her dress and the way she quietly waited. "Take a seat," she said gesturing to an empty chair.
Genna instantly complied. "Greetings, Ma'am," she said with a sweet smile. "I'm Genna from Amber Hills Hold. I have been searched and just now brought to the Weyr."
"I see. Do you have your search token?"
"Yes, I do," Genna said, offering the token up for inspection. Should she have opened with that? She had no idea how to behave, but tried her hardest to keep the nervousness inside. So far that was working.
"And you decided to accept?" Maybe there was more to this girl than first impressions implied. Was there a suitor she was fleeing perhaps? Or a need to craft?
"Yes, I did," Genna nodded seriously, deciding not to expand too much on that. Saying that it had taken her several sevendays to respond to her search might not be the best opening.
"If I recall it was a short while ago that we had riders out at Amber Hills, did you need time to sort things out with your family there?"
"Yes, I did," Genna replied. "My mother didn't want me to go at first, but eventually she realised just how much I want to be a candidate and she allowed me to go."
"And if you fail to impress? Will you return to the Hold?"
"No," Genna replied resolutely. "Even apart from the difficulty my parents would have finding me a decent marriage prospect, I would much rather make a home of my own in the Weyr and find another way to be of use here. I have enough experience to be of service to the Headwoman, for example." And possibly even make it Headwoman herself one day. That seemed to be a decent
alternative to impressing.
"Okay, well then. I'd advise you to check in with the Headwoman now, she'll organise you a place in the barracks, and get you into the candidate programme. There will be chores to do, and as you don't have a craft, there may be some time for you to explore that area, perhaps something like Baking, which would give you some exposure to the work of the Headwoman and her staff."
"Thank you, Ma'am, that is a great idea. Do you have directions to the Headwoman's office for me?" Genna pushed back her seat and rose from it.
"If you come out from here, and turn left at the end of the corridor, you'll see it on the left hand side."
Genna nodded, turned to leave but then halted and turned back for a moment. "My thanks to you again, Ma'am, I hope we meet again." And with that she left the Weyrwoman Second's office in search for the Headwoman.
