After making sure his bed was folded, he began to put away his new
things from the headwoman. His mind was trying to get to the next step. He didn't know where to
go or the name of the person he should see, really. His eyes surreptitiously looked around,
wondering if there were any fellow apprentices about. He could ask one of them.
Wilraden sat on his cot, hands folded over his stomach as he observed
this new arrival. Dark eyes followed him covertly, studying,
categorizing and labeling. New boy definitely. Unsure of himself and
uncertain as to what to do. He didn't offer to help; he wasn't the
giving kind. Instead he watched.
Seeing the quiet boy on his cot finally, Rohagelen had no problem in
approaching him. The young teen-turner walked up and nodded. "Greetings. I
was wondering if you knew who the Master of Apprentices was and where
he might be?"
At first Wilraden didn't answer, tilting his head to the side to flick dark
eyes over the new arrival. Resting his elbows on his knees, he finally
answered. "You should talk to Fayazel. He's the Hall second. He'll be in the
main building."
"Oh, thanks. I'm Rohagelen, new here." He offered his hand, which is what
his father would have done. There was just a slight bit of insecurity. He needed
to make friends. At his turns, rejection was a killer.
The older young man considered the proffered hand for a moment before
glancing up at the boy and then back down at the hand. He finally took
the hand, shook it briefly but firmly and released it. "I know."
"What's your name?" he asked before pulling his hand back down. "Been here
awhile?" Beginning to see that he was going to have to catch up in many
ways, the young former holder was starting to calculate his chances.
"Wilraden." He rose, standing a good head and shoulders over the younger
man. "A good while, yes." He glanced down at the younger man and sighed
softly. "Come on, let's get you settled."
This was good. Following casually, he nodded. "Thanks. So where did you come
from originally?" He was trying to detect an accent, but sometimes it was
chancy.
"Mostly around Amber Hills." Wilraden shrugged, his voice level. "I guess
you're just starting, right?"
"Yeah. Came in from the family cothold. We mostly do farming and such so..
this is going to be different." **Already was** "So you've lived here then.
How are the winters?"
"Of course its going to be different. Different rules. Different schedule."
He turned to look at Rohagelen and frowned slightly. "What's with all the
questions?"
"If you don't ask questions, you never get to the know the answers," he
repeated from rote, then grew quiet as he realized he was maybe becoming
annoying. He was just so curious. His eyes tracked the people they passed.
"You'll have plenty of time for questions the whole time you are here."
Wilraden replied calmly. "If I tell you everything right now, you may not
remember everything. Take it a little at a time and you'll do fine."
He looked down at the young boy. "Don't rush into anything. You have time
now."
