Lady Yanley

Genna

Yanley was still in a bed rest. The baby was a bundle in her arms. She was still amazed she had been able to produce him. Daley was very cute baby with amazing amount of dark hair. He was also big sized, which explained why Yanley didn't walk around yet.

Genna had found her way to Yanley's chambers with some help and knocked on the door softly, not wanting to wake the new mother or infant if either of them was getting some much needed rest.

"Please, just do come in!" Yanley called with soft but audible voice. "I'm not up to meeting visitor's at the door yet."

Genna quickly made her way into the room and to Yanley's bed, smiling at the sight of a familiar face. "Greetings, lady Yanley, I came to offer my congratulations on the birth of your son."

"Thank you, Genna. Please take a seat," Yanley replied with a warm smile and gestured towards a chair next to the bed.

Genna took a seat and searched Yanley with her eyes. "You look well," she smiled. All things considering, that was. Giving birth had to be a dreadful thing, Genna mused.

"I'm happy," Yanley replied, "Tired, sore and happy. Do you want to hold him? He's a well behaving baby, most of the time."

Genna hesitated. As a Hold girl, she was supposed to love babies. But she was a Weyr girl now and in truth babies made her feel terribly uncomfortable. In the end, training won out though and she moved over to Yanley to take the babe up in her arms.

Yanley made sure Genna had a good hold of the infant before letting him go herself. "So, how did you end up here in the Weyr? I thought your mother was dead set against it?" She knew most of the story from Chupsin. Chupsin had actually asked her to keep an eye on Genna before he returned to Amber Hills hold.

"She was," Genna nodded, eyes fixed on the baby. "But eventually I won her over." She didn't intend to go into to much detail on that subject so she quickly changed it back to Daley. "He looks healthy, too," she remarked as the little thing wriggled in her arms. She tried to hide her disgust as some spit dribbled down his chin.

"He is, and he has a good apetite," Yanley laughed and took the baby back from Genna. She could see the girl was uncomfortable holding him. "So, how are you settling into Weyr? It's very different here."

"It is, but in a good way, really," Genna smiled. "I get to do something else for a change and baking has been a lot of fun so far."

"I'm glad you're doing well," Yanley said approvingly.

"Thank you," Genna smiled. Yanley wasn't too bad for a 'Lady'. Then again, she was now a woman of the Weyr herself. "What are you plans for the future here?" she asked curiously.

"Well, after I get out of this bed and Daley is old enough, I'll find some work to do. Either fostering children or I heard the Headwoman needs more assitants," Yanley answered. Both jobs were ones she felt she was competent for and had experience with.

"That's what I've been thinking of if I don't impress, being a Headwoman's assistant," Genna couldn't help but share. She was proud of her well thought out future plans.

"It's a good job for someone with your status," Yanley approved. Genna wasn't Blood but she was still a young woman of good birth. "It requires pretty much the same skills than running a household or a hold." Had Genna not been Searched, she would hade become some holder's wife...even Lord Holder's wife.

"Exactly, that's what I thought," Genna nodded. "The Weyrwoman Second suggested I'd take up baking in the meanwhile, to help me better prepare for that option."

"Baking is...good hobby," Yanley did have her own set of prejustices stemming from her back ground as Lord Holder's daughter. "It's useful skill. I never been much for baking or cooking in general. I know the basics, that's it."

"I was ehm.. asked to help out in the kitchens back at Amber Hills," just as much as she wouldn't admit to being forced to help as a punishment, she refused to call Amber Hills Hold her home anymore. "I actually liked it a lot. It's lively in the kitchens."

"As I said, it's a useful skill and Zelanka is exellent teacher. I'm glad you liked it," Yanley replied. She had nothing against young women volunteering to help out at the kitchens.

"But I'm still hoping I won't be needing it," Genna said with a somewhat impish grin. Because no matter how realistically inclined she was, there was still a teenager in there longing to dream big. "Do you think I have what it takes to be a rider, lady Yanley?"

"If and since they Searched you, yes, you have what it takes," Yanley was convinced of that.

"Thank you," Genna smiled, glad with that answer. "I think so to, but I hope I get a chance to prove it!"

"You will," Yanley reassured. "Meanwhile, us two Amber Hills woman have to stick together," she continued.

"We should," Genna smiled, quite liking the idea of having an actual Lady at her side, even if being a Lady probably didn't mean much at the Weyr. "If there is anything can help you with, you'll only have to ask."

"Thank you, Genna. And if you ever wanted talk with someone, I'm here for you," Yanley replied.
