Dorihn frowned as he examined the jars of herbs, then consulted his
ledgers again, murmuring to himself and then scratched his head. There
was a distinct discrepancy there that just did not make sense. He
picked up a jar, opened it to eyeball the contents and looked back
down at the figures. Painstakingly, he took out a scale and measured
the contents once again. This was the third jar that had come up too
light.
They weren't highly volatile or addictive herbs, otherwise he'd be
more concerned, but the fact that there were three that were coming up
short were frustrating for his ordered mind. There was nothing written
down to explain where the herbs had been used.
It was unusual for this particular Journeyman to need handholding, so
when Reeva received the apprentice-borne note from the store rooms,
she made the time to answer his summons straight away instead of
putting it off.
"Dorihn? There's a problem?"
Reeva's halo of hair had fuzzed up as usual by this time of day, so
the sight she made framed in the doorway was probably a demented one
rather then an impressive one as she always hoped. She sighed.
"What am I saying? There's *always* a problem around here. What I
mean, is why is it *you* telling me about it, instead of one of the
lackwit slackjaws?"
He knew- or at least should know by now- that she respected his work,
and the fact she was there straight away spoke of it too. She
respected no one's ego.
He looked up, his steady expression not shifting in the slightest at
her eccentricities. If anything, Dorihn's stable, no-nonsense and
humorless demeanor often served him well in the infirmary. He rose
from the herb cabinet and quietly handed Reeva the ledgers. "We've
herbs missing and misplaced. They're not anything that could be
considered addictive, even combined, but no one has made notations of
using them."
Reeva carefully examined the ledger he'd handed her, absentmindedly
smoothing back her hair. But no degree of careful observation would
alter what it - and the journeyman- said.
" Its a stomach soother. Why on this sweet good land would someone
filch that? I'm presuming you've checked its not around here in the
wrong corner?"
Her frown was vicious.
"Any other discrepencies?"
"Not yet." He frowned, rubbing his bare chin. "I just caught this. I
checked everywhere, but I did notice a small bag of contraceptive tea
shoved into a cabinet." He bent slightly and brought the satchel out.
"Perhaps someone forgot it."
Reeva's eyebrow twitched again. "Now, that's interesting. Interesting
indeed." She thought a moment.
"Can you get me a list of who's been warned off pregnancy for a while?
Maybe someone doesn't want to listen to their healer."
Dorihn scratched his head. "That's probably a long list, but I can
have it ready for you by morning, I suppose. I'll have to go through
the charts. Recently though, I would only say a bare few."
"Hmm...well, I suppose there's not much else we can do, but we had
best be looking into it. I'll see what enquiries I can make..."
"Should I start locking up the medicines? It might make it a little
more inconvenient, Reeva, but I'd rather be safe."
"Yes. All of them for now, not just the more exciting ones. Organize it so
the senior herbalist on each shift has access to a key, and I'll hang onto
the rest in my office for now. Whoever's in charge can check it back in as
shifts change. If we need a third, you can keep it. Send anyone who whines
about the inconvenience to my office."
She gave a little grin. She'd enjoy that, in the face of fools who let
filching happen.
Dorihn nodded, but sighed at the questions that would soon be leveled at him
from other healers in the infirmary. He paused and picked up a sheaf of
charts. "Wait a moment. That girl who fell...she was in here recently." He
flicked through the hides. "She was here for a checkup and asked for some
tea."
"The blind girl?" There was a sudden sinking feeling in Reeva's stomach that
was matched on her face. Call it intuition, call it paranoia... someone who
couldn't eyeball their own herbs was a touch more likely to be fobbed off
with the wrong thing then most. "I think someone had best check up on that
one, in particular." She sighed softly.
"Yes. Bahji, it says her name is. Said she was cleared for intimate
relations and she was given tea."
"The girl who was tripped down the stairs?"
Reeva frowned.
" I'll go see her myself. I'll not be happy til I know that's what she
actually got. You'll handle the rest of my instructions? Perhaps we should
call a general meeting about the new procedures- head off the whiners?"
