After hearing a new bronzerider had come into the Weyr, Rhosyn
couldn't help but lament the fact that she was as big as a Queen
dragon. **Shells it just has to be right now!** Sighing, she tried her
best to minimize her obvious bulk and to accentuate the benefits like
a bigger chest. As it was, she wondered what this one would be like.
Since she didn't go as far as fast, she took her spot at the head
table in the Dining Cavern for breakfast and made sure that the man
had received an invitation through a candidate. Trying her best not to
eat everything on the plate before he got there, she was pacing
herself as her hazel orbs scanned the entrance.
K'lvin, although a bronzerider, was just a normal man in many ways and
had never really considered himself a man of consequence when he had
been living at Dragonsfall. The invitation to breakfast with the
Weyrwoman of River Bluff came as a surprise then, but an honor none
the less. Like most Weyrs, people loved to talk so K'lvin already knew
that the Weyrwoman was in the advanced stages of pregnancy.
He strolled into the Dining Cavern, his collar-length hair brushed
back away from his face, his shoulders set confidently as he made his
way up to the Head Table, "My apologies for being tardy I was detoured
by an eight Turn-old with an attitude." Kylena had woken up that
morning in a less than pleasant mood.
A brow raised at that. "Ah..that's right, you have a child." She was sure the
little one had been assigned a fostermother though, which begged the question
of why it had been a bother for him. That was why they had fosterparents-so
riders could do their duties without bother. Rhosyn herself was quite ready to
hand hers over when the time came. "I hope that isn't something that happens
often." Her comment was idle, but it was clear that she was thinking.
"I'm Rhosyn, though you know that. Welcome to River Bluff." She
signaled for him to sit.
K'lvin nearly quirked an eyebrow at the woman's comment about Kylena.
He would think a woman so obviously pregnant would be a bit more
understanding when it came to parenthood. Not every woman wanted to be
a mother, though. Goldriders were especially busy he knew. "And I am
K'lvin, although you already know that." The man's smile was easy,
revealing a strong set of white teeth as he took a seat beside of her.
**He's got more turns than I do. Not near as old as K'sedel though. And tall
like N'vanik.** She was appraising him and she wasn't very subtle about it.
Then again, she didn't have to be. Obviously Rhosyn wasn't in a frame of mind
to welcome all comers just then but she was wondering if Y'gel was right about
that pregnancy beauty thing. "Have some of the food and tell me why you came
here from Dragonsfall." Most did it because of the warmth.
The man grabbed up a piece of toast first, wondering what to tell the
Weyrwoman. In truth most of his reason for moving to River Bluff was
that it was a better place for him and Kylena to live as father and
daughter without the memories of Cylena. "Mostly for the warmer
climate." He fell with the usual answer, "But I also think it is nice
getting to start again in a fresh place with people that don't know me."
That was something she had done herself though for different reasons
so she could accept that answer. "It'll take time to get used to it from the
cold." She'd never enjoy being so hot herself. "I imagine there are some folks
here from Dragonsfall besides yourself though that would." A wry grin came
across her features before she swallowed a small piece of fruit.
K'lvin smiled while he chewed his piece of toast and swallowed, "That
is true, milady, there are a few familiar faces here that I recognize
from Dragonsfall. None that I was very closely acquainted with
though." He had heard rumors, of course, especially regarding the
Weyrleader and Weyrwoman. That was quite common with any Weyr though
because the Weyrleaders always tended to be in the public eye. "I
don't pay attention much to Weyr gossip." He picked up a piece of
fruit as he glanced at Rhosyn.
"Oh? Some of it might be true you know." Then came a real Rhosyn smile
followed by a laugh. Her hair shone in the light as a result of all the things
Solieira was feeding her. "And one thing you need to know-I'm not a lady."
She was forever wondering why everyone kept calling her that. Maybe something
from all that Lady Weyrholder nonsense.
That line made the bronzerider chuckle, "What should I call you then?
Ma'am?" He wrinkled his nose and shook his head, "No you are far too
young and beautiful for a title such as ma'am." K'lvin looked her up
and down, "And far too womanly to be called 'sir'."
"Most settle for Weyrwoman or Rhosyn. Both are just as fine." There
was also Senior Weyrwoman and Orlaith's rider and goldrider, but she
didn't bother with all of that either. **A flatterer. That's good. And
he laughs.** "Young and beautiful in the same sentence-a little much
eh? Still points for trying. You'll be flying with J'ren I hear.
You'll like that and he needs the help." It hadn't been lost on her
that this was a good thing for the Weyr as a whole.
K'lvin's smile was still intact, "Yes, I am afraid, _Weyrwoman_," he
said the word with emphasis since he would normally have said 'milady'
in its place, "that once you are over forty they toss you into the
Wing because you have 'experience'. I don't mind though, J'ren seems
like a fair man with a good head on his shoulders." He bit down into
the soft piece of fruit, "I hear that there is an older gold here that
will be working in your place while you are out with the baby?"
"She'll be leading my wing until Vilarth's eggs hatch. Tsaera was
Weyrwoman here when the Pass started. Lenala will be performing my
duties as Weyrwoman though." It was a complicated situation and one
that she didn't relish dealing with. She wondered if Cyradis' new
Second's gold would Rise and land her in the same situation. **That
would be hilarious. Then maybe Tsaera could go over there**
The man's eyebrows raised a bit, "That _is_ an interesting situation.
Will Tsaera leave when her stint is over?" He had never heard of a
retired goldrider coming back to a Weyr, even to fill in. But then
when a Weyr was out of available goldriders he supposed they had
little choice.
"We'll see what happens." It depended upon how she felt about the whole thing.
Rhosyn knew that goldrider business like that wasn't public business though and
wouldn't say more than that. "And now I fear I see your wingleader
giving me a look. You'd better go or you'll be late for wingmeeting."
She waved over at the other bronzerider.
K'lvin looked up as well, "It would seem you are right." The
bronzerider rose from the table, and put a hand lightly to Rhosyn's
shoulder, "Thank you for the breakfast invitation." Pushing his chair
in, K'lvin left the Head Table, following the rest of his wingmates
out for the Torrent wingmeeting.
