Description: An accident at the Weyr's dock
Location: River Bluff Weyr
Date: month 5, day 12 of Turn 7
Notes: Part 1 of 2
Tamah was actually inside his office when it happened, so he never
knew _exactly_ what caused it.
Men were unloading a tithe ship, and being bit too careless with it.
Either the rope used to lift cargo crates out of the ship's hold to
the dock had been frayed and snapped or the crate had been loosely
attached to the rope and slipped off.
Tamah heard a noise, a loud crash followed with yells for help and
cursing. He ran out. He realized what had happened as soon as he saw
the broken crate on the dock. His first thought was: How bad is it,
and second thought: Why didn't they use the sharing cargo net? His
first action was to scribble a hasty note to the infirmary. He gave it
to his bronze Zenit to deliver, sending him to her sister. Drumilla
was healer, and he could trust Zenit locate her from anywhere. Then he
rushed to the scene to investigate how bad it was and start the rescue.
Drumilla was putting away tools she had just sterilized when her
brother's flit appeared. Zenit seemed agitated and landed on her arm.
"What it is, Z?" she asked and noticed the message. She removed it and
read it. "Master! Anybody! There's accident at the port!" she started
running and calling.
Riveenata flinched as she heard the news. She knew the port would have
supplies, but she grabbed one of the triage kits, reasoning it was
important to also have a selection on hand.
"I've got a supply kit," she reported, as she ran after Drumilla.
"Good. I don't know how many are injured," Dru took a first aid kit from
the shelf. "They should have stretchers in the Harbour Master's office."
At the dock, a young boy wrung his hands and stared with shock at the
disaster in front of him. Just having started working just this
morning, Tridan had tried to hold on to the rope, but he had forgotten
his gloves and the rope had burned into his palms. He hadn't meant to
let go!
The message came in while she was in her office. It was craft business but
the cargo might be Weyr business-her business. Rhosyn wasn't very quick
these days and she couldn't fly, but that didn't mean she couldn't walk
normally down to the harbor to find out just what was going on.
Tamah was directing his men to clear off the broken crate and its content
so they could help the two men left under. One of the men was cursing and
yelling, while the other one lay immobile and unresponsive. He was the one
that worried Tamah. If you had energy left to scream and yell, you weren't
too seriously injured. He also knew better than try to move the men, just
the debris around them.
"Tridan! Snap out of it and go to fetch a medical kit and stretchers from
the Harbour Master's office. The kit is on the shelf and stretcher behind
the door."
Nekin sprinted across the dock and got his hands under one large crate
picking it up bodily and moving it off one screaming victim. He had no
healing but he did have massive muscle power. He put a hard calloused
hand on the lad's shoulder. "Give the man some help son," he said
kindly before turning to move another crate from where it had crashed.
Reeva's sigh at the confusion of voices turned quickly into action as she
barked orders at those around her. When she was satisfied they'd be
followed, she mad her own way to the docks, case in hand.
Drumilla ran right after the master.
