Taren thanked the young rider who had taken him and his daughter to River
Bluff Weyr and told him that he didn't need a ride back. They could always
get a ride home from someone in River Bluff, his mother or brother's
weyrmate or some of his old childhood friends.
Taren had come to River Bluff to visit his family there. His mother had a
birthday. You didn't miss a thing like that. He had already missed his
brother's birthday two months ago and had just sent him congratulations-note
with Aes. But then, he and Tamah never been close.
"Is that aunt Dru?" Tarine tugged her father's sleeve and asked bit shyly.
It had been a long since she had seen any of her relatives from River Bluff
Weyr.
"It is indeed," Taren grinned and waved at the young, black haired woman.
She was pretty but not exceptional. Drumilla was his youngest sister, the
afterthought of the family. Their mother had already been past 50 turns
when she was born. Tamilla had thought she had hit the menopause but it
turned out she was pregnant instead. Drumilla became everybody's
favourite. Even Taren was very fond of her, despite not being around much
while she grew up. He had been pursuing his own career.
"Hello, Taren! Long time no see. And Tarine, my goodness you're grown!" Dru
rushed to greet them and got a big hug from her brother. Her blue flit
warbled a greeting to Aes.
"I've been busy," Taren replied with apologetic tone.
"Well, I'm sure mother has something to say about it," Dru said with a
wicked little grin.
"How is mother, by the way?" Taren asked when the started to walk towards
their mother's weyr.
"She's just turned 73, how do you think she's doing? Except for moaning
about her age, she's fine. Still fit to fly in queen's wing. "
"She's a tough old greenrider," Taren said with a smile.
"Don't call her old or she'll box your ear," Dru laughed.
"I'm sure she'll fill me in," Taren said, "So, how about you, little one? I
still can't see senior journeyman's knots on you," Taren asked, making a
big show of peering her shoulder knots.
"Aw, I'm only 23, give me two Turns. Besides, I have trouble choosing
specialty," Dru replied.
"What's there to choose from? Surgery is only option worth an effort,"
Taren said.
"Maybe for you, but I'm not as cold blooded and steel nerved as you are,"
Dru replied with serious tone.
"Well, you can always specialize in general healing," Taren said and
tousled her hair, well knowing how she hated that.
"Hey, cut it off," she slapped his hand. Tarine, watching their interaction
with wide eyes, giggled nervously. She didn't know if she should be worried
or amused the way grown ups were behaving.
Dru noted her discomfort and shifted her attention to the little girl. "So,
what did you bring for grandmother, Tarine?"
"A necklace. I picked it up," Tarine replied proudly.
"I'm sure she'll love it," Dru smiled. "Come on, race you to her weyr.
Belanoth is expecting scratch from you," she urged her and threw a
challenging look at her brother.
"I'm a Weyrhealer, I don't run. Unless it's medical emergency," Taren said
with pompous air.
"It will be if you stall," Dru goaded him and then she and Tarine started
running.
"I'm not running," Taren muttered after them.
