How's the Weyrling Business

Writers: Chelle, Paula

Characters: D'lorn, Drumilla
Description: Drumilla and D'lorn talk about the weyrlings.
Location: River Bluff Weyr
Date: month 5, day 10 of Turn 7
Notes: Mentioned: Ameala, Fitchan, Sefanya, U'das, B'jon, H'vack

"Hello, D'lorn," Drumilla greeted the greenrider with a warm smile. She always had a smile for everyone. "How are the weyrlings doing? No one needs to be patched up?"

"Not at present, but some of them might when U'das gets done with them." He found himself chuckling, but really it wasn't far from the truth. During strength training, it was common for some of the weyrlings to have small injuries when they overexerted themselves.

Drumilla snorted. "Overworking the poor kids?" She had Stood, like every weyrbrat since she was old enough, but had never Impressed. Now she was too old for Impression. She did had her craft though.

"Well a lot of them are holdbrats who never had to lift a finger hardly. So this sort of physical exertion is alien to them." That was why they went through the whole conditioning process after all. They had to be ready when the time came. "Some are better than others."

Dru nodded. "I've done health exam for some of those candidates. Those who come from small cotholds tend to be more fit. They've used to work hard on fields or beastholds alongside with their parents."

"Exactly. And those I don't mind. Like B'jon." The boy was a hard enough worker. "Then we have the female who ended up pregnant so she'll be behind."

"Ouw, that can complicate things. There'll be lot of training she can't do while expecting," Dru said with a shake of head.

"Exactly. And then I have to catch myself to keep her separate and to limit what I tell her to do." Of course D'lorn was used to having a female inside his head but Villith would never become pregnant so he never had to remember those sorts of things about her. "Do you have any advice?"

"Well, no abdominal crunches..." she grinned. "It depends a lot how she feels. If she has no troubles, she can do almost anything, except /betweening/ and certain exercises. If she's tired or have morning sickness, that naturally limits what she's able to do."

"But I mean, I can't have her running all day long like the rest and climbing things and all of that. She could fall, right?" The poor greenrider-he was a worrier anyway.

"Running is fine, that doesn't affect pregnancy. I would be cautious with climbing since pregnancy tend to alter
balance," Dru answered. "Being pregnant isn't being sick, so no special favors."

"It's not? I thought it could make you sick." D'lorn didn't know women. He knew Villith but it didn't always count the same.

"The morning sickness only last normally the first trimester and some doesn't have it at all," Dru tried to explain with laughter in her voice.

"Hmmm....I don't know why they call it morning sick since I see women running for the latrine at all hours." He didn't mention the fact that he might have taken a wrong turn and landed himself in the ladies' latrine a time or two.

"It seems to be at its worst on the mornings," Dru answered. She hadn't even let her pregnancy go far enough to have morning sickness.

"Hmm well I wouldn't know. I suppose the father will be keeping the baby instead of fostering it. He's a crafter
though, so he might not be able to take care of it fulltime." D'lorn wondered if the girl realized that. The Weyrlingmaster would have to talk to her about it. He'd hate to be a trundlebug on that wall.

"No, he wouldn't if wanted to keep his craft. That's why we have the creche," Dru replied.

"Maybe there's a good fostermother out there. Sefanya might have room." He shrugged, and changed subjects. "How's things in the infirmary?"

"The usual. Way too busy time to time," Dru replied.

"At least you have job security," he joked before walking along with her down the tunnel.
