"Daddy!" The little girl's voice called out in terror. "Daddy!"
It took a moment or two for the sound to penetrate, but the brownrider was
soon slipping out of bed, grabbing a robe as he moved from his bed where
Cyradis was still sleeping. "I'm coming," he called softly.
"Whas going on," Cyradis said sleepily.
"Not sure," the response was equally sleepy, "One of the girls sounds
upset."
"Okay," she said only half aware and snuggled back into her pillow.
Crying could be heard from the other room and this time the call was
more pleading "Daddy?"
"Ssshhh", he whispered. It definitely wasn't Deralie who was calling, so it
must be Kielya. "Are you okay baby?"
"N-no," she tried to stifle her crying but she clung to K'deren. "It
was a really big feline trying to get me. I called you and called
you."
"I'm here now," he said, holding her close. "Nothing is going to happen, I
won't let it, and nor will your mother."
"Y-you promise?" The little girls lip trembled and she sniffed back her
tears.
"I promise," he assured her. "No big felines allowed in here."
"Okay," she said with a little gulp, though she still clung tightly to
him. "Can I come sleep with you," she hiccuped.
He gave her a gentle hug, "You need to be quiet if you do, your mama is
asleep still."
She nodded and sniffed then reached up her little arms to circle his
neck when he picked her up. She liked K'deren very much. He would read
to her and Deralie and never made mama cry.
"No be very quiet, and when you wake up in the morning, you'll be a nice
surprise for your mama. but no tickling." He wagged a finger in mock
admonishment. "At least not until she's awake"
That brought a glimmer of a smile to Kielya's face. "Can we wake her up?"
"Now that would be a bad idea, I think she was really tired."
"Okay," she said softly with a little pout of disappointment but then
she lay her head against K'deren's shoulder and sighed. Everything was
alright now and she felt safe again. He'd take care of her and she
knew it down deep in a primal way like she knew the sky was blue. It
was an immutable law of the universe though of course a little girl
like her didn't express the thoughts in that way. It just _was_. She
began to sink back toward sleep as he walked through the Weyr but then
she started awake again. "Can I have a drink of water?"
"I can get you that," he said.
"Thanks," she murmured and snuggled closer in the strong arms that held her.
"And then back to bed," he said.
"With you and mamma," she argued, he wasn't gonna trick her that easy.
"You said I could," a big yawn distorted the last word.
"I know, and you can. But lets get you that drink first."
She held the glass with two hands like they always told her and took
several deep gulps before handing it back to him. Then she gave a big
sigh and laid her head back on his shoulder. "Thank you," she said
and patted the other side of his face with her small hand. "You're a
good daddy."
K'deren smiled at that. "And you're a good daughter."
"I love you," she said sleepily as he laid her down in the bed next to
her mother.
Cyradis opened her eyes and smiled up at her weyrmate. "So do I," she
agreed and reached out to K'deren.
"Love you both," he said as he got into bed, reaching out to hug them both.
