A Visit and a Present

Characters: Malyna, Sh'dori
Description: The father and daughter chat and spend some time together
Location: Dolphin Cove Weyr
Date: month 5, day 8 of Turn 7

"Cayleryth, let's go see father shall we?" Malyna called out as she
moved towards the ledge and mounted the green. She hadn't spoken with
Sh'dori in a few days and she wanted to see if perhaps they could
spend the afternoon together. Ever since she'd Impressed, she'd found
she wanted to spend more time with him, learning what he knew about
dragonriding and building on his experience. She'd always enjoyed the
times they'd spent together even as she grew, but things were
different now that she was a rider too.

Sh'dori was sitting on his ledge, leaning against napping Rahmuth. He
had knife and piece of wood and pile of wood shavings around him.

Cayleryth winged her way towards the ledge and landed with just enough
room for her small body.

"Father," Malyna greeted as she dismounted. "How are you today?"

"Just fine, and how are you two today?" Sh'dori replied. "Cayleryth
looks good," he gave the green an appraising look.

"She's growing well. Before you know it, we'll both be in the fighting
wings with the rest of you." Malyna smiled at Sh'dori. "Otherwise, we
are good today. We have a spot of free time, so we were trying to
decide what to do with ourselves for the day."

The though of his little girl fighting Thread did make Sh'dori
nervous. He had lost one daughter that way. He kept his worry to
himself and smiled instead. "Feel free to join me in doing nothing."

She laughed, "Doing nothing doesn't sound so bad." She flopped down on
a nearby seat and just enjoyed a few moments of peace and quiet.

"How's your new weyr working out?" Sh'dori asked after awhile.

"It's been good. I mean, it's nothing even like yours, but it's enough
for Cayleryth and I," Malyna replied, shifting to dangle her legs over
the arm of the chair. "I'm pretty sure Cayleryth will rise soon too. I
mean, some of the other greens have already started. She's always been
a bit smaller than the others, so I'm not surprised she didn't rise
early like some of the bigger greens."

"Nobody's weyr is like mine. It's a mess, drudges refuse to enter it,"
Sh'dori replid with dry tone. His weyr did resemble a woodsmith's
workshop more than living space. "And don't worry, Cayleryth will rise
in due time. Just tip me off when she starts to glow so I can take
Rahmuth away from Weyr," Sh'dori replied. "Hey, you're free to check
inside if you find something nice to your weyr," he pointed to behind
his back, to his weyr. "There's some pieces of furniture in various
stages of manufacturing there. Or maybe you need box for little
things? There's several of those too and some are even finished."

"Will do father," she replied to his comment about Cayleryth. They
both knew they didn't want _that_ to happen between them. At his next
suggestion she eagerly hopped up out of her chair and with the spirit
of youth started to examine the wood pieces that were there.

She ran her hands over a half-finished bench. She liked it. Perhaps if
Sh'dori could finish it she could use it as extra seating for company
in her own weyr. Then she found a medium sized box. Lifting the lid,
she breathed in the scent of the wood. It would be perfect at the foot
of her bed. Lifting it she brought it back to the front.

"I'd love to take this one if I could," she remarked, "and there's a
bench there that's nearly finished. It would be great for company
someday."

"Great. I'll try to get the bench finished for you. Can't say _when_
though," Sh'dori replied. He tended to do multiple projects at once.
Organizating wasn't his strongest skill.

"No rush," she replied, "just whenever you get a chance." She set the
medium trunk down, already planning where she would put in her small
weyr.

"Do you need help getting that to your weyr?" Sh'dori asked. "I can
always loan Rahmuth's muscles," he continued and over heard something
his dragon said to the little green. "Sheesh, stop flirting with her.
You're never gona chase her."

Malyna laughed at that and then sobered, "She _will_ rise soon, so
I'll make sure I let you know." The thought of what would happen if
Sh'dori didn't get away gave her a shudder.

"And I wouldn't mind some nice dragon muscles to take this to our
weyr," she shifted the chest with her foot.

"All right, that lazy sod can use the exercise. I just fetch his cargo
straps," Sh'dori said and was replied with loud snort from his brown.

"Sounds great," Malyna replied.

Sh'dori nodded and got the straps. It didn't take long to have the
chest latched to Rahmuth's back. "Lead the way," he asked his
daughter, vaulting to
Rahmuth's back.

Calling Cayleryth back, she strapped herself in and soon they were
heading to the much smaller weyr that was home. Rahmuth would find it
rather cramped once he arrived, but it was enough for her and
Cayleryth.

Sliding off her back, the green moved out of the way to allow the
larger dragon to land.
