Genna

Genna

"Excuse me," Genna said in her most pleasant, polite tone of voice. "Could
you maybe help me out a moment, Sir?" She was struggling with a big pile of
boxes she was supposed to bring back to the Bakers. She had stacked them a
little too high and was now heavily out of balance. Luckily, she thought, a
tall muscular man just walked by and she was sure he wouldn't mind helping
her out a little.

P'nal stopped walking, curious to see who had addressed him. Looking down,
he spotted Genna and her candidate knots. His mouth curled up into a grin,
revealing very white teeth against his dark skin. "What is it that you
need?"

"I just," Genna paused briefly as she straightened the pile of boxes again.
"Need to get these boxes to the Bakers. And I took too much. Could you help
me carry them the last bit, Sir?"

"Awww wee girl." He grabbed up a few from her and adjusted them easily on
arms that was used to hauling firestone sacks, ropes, straps, and
everything else. P'nal's turns of dealing with Jodeth came in handy. "My
pleasure it would be."

"Not a wee girl, an overambitious girl," Genna chuckled. "But thank you so
much, do you know the way?"

"Overambitious?" he questioned before nodding. P'nal had been in the Weyr
so many turns, he knew almost all of it though maybe not so good as the
brats did.

"Well, just in regard to boxes," Genna replied smartly. "Otherwise I'm
quite the reasonable young lady." Following P'nal with a much smaller stack
of boxes she sighed a breath of relief. Thank Faranth for chivalrous riders.

"That's a good thing. Women need to be reasonable." Smiling to himself,
P'nal watched her as she walked. "So candidate...how long have you been
here?"

Genna wasn't exactly sure on how to take that first comment, so she decided
to let it go. "I've been here a few sevendays now. So not all that long,
but well in time for next Hatching. My name is Genna by the way, Sir." She
added the Sir after a moment of silence, suddenly realizing she was talking
to a far-far superior.

"So Genna, do you have designs on the gold egg then?" So many of the girls
did of course. P'nal himself could have only hoped for a bronze, but he was
more than happy with his brown. Jodeth was all he needed and he was glad
that he didn't have to worry about being Weyrleader or anything like that.

"Hmm, I guess that falls under the reasonable category," Genna said with a
chuckle. "I mean, the odds of me even being here as a candidate.. adding a
gold to the mix would make it too unbelievable to be true. But of course,
the egg is starring in my day dreams. It's so beautiful, I don't think any
girl can help but dream about it."

"It can be a wonderful thing to be sure, but it will change your life in
more ways than you can think of. Sometimes I wish some of you girls would
talk to some of the goldriders before you set your eyes on it." P'nal's
tone was still upbeat, but it was sensible and moderated. It was true-a
queen would take over your life.

"Well, setting our eyes on it has nothing to do with actually impressing a
gold, I've been told," Genna replied with a shrug. "So I guess it doesn't
really matter."

"If you Stand, you can Impress. Better to Stand knowing what you're getting
into than not." P'nal remembered a few of the females in his class having
problems with their fighting greens for a bit because they had been so set
on something else. He supposed it also worked the other way.

"I guess that is right," Genna said after a moment of thought. "But we
can't just go trotting up to the goldriders and ask for their time, right?
I mean, they're so busy."

"They're busy but as goldriders they know what it was like for them and not
knowing. Just set up an appointment for them." It wasn't hard. P'nal had
appointments when he was in his office.

"Hmm, thank you for the tip, Sir, I think I will try that," Genna nodded as
they arrived at the Baker's Hall. "And thank you for helping me out. Do you
mind bringing them in with me?"

"Eh well it's not so much trouble." P'nal nodded to some of the folks and
he defly got the boxes to an empty table. P'nal was mentally wishing he had
a simpler life at times, but it was his duty and so he would do it. "Good
winds to you, Genna."

"And the same to you, Sir," Genna replied brightly.
