Cardella

Cardella

She was excited. Helcoger had arranged this meeting for her. She was
eager to formally meet his father and put her request into motion.
Now, finally, she could be what she had always dreamed of when she'd
first gone to the Bakercraft Hall. Who would have imagined just how
much her life would change since then?

With a smile, she headed down towards the Weyrbowl where she'd
arranged to meet with Helcoger. He would take it from there.

Helcoger waved as he saw the greenrider approach. "You made it then," he
called out with a grin.

"I wouldn't miss this for all the firestone in the firestone pits!"
She grinned. It would be nice to _finally_ be considered a true
student of the craft. No, not a student, an apprentice or more.
Cardella had always loved what she did at the Bakercraft Hall. She had
only wished she could be acknowledged alongside the males, many of
whom she'd surpassed during her time there. Well, finally, the time
had come for her to be formally accepted into the craft. She couldn't
wait.

"Ready to meet my father? You'll like him, or I hope you will."

"I am," she replied, "lead the way."

Helcoger lead the way to where his father Cogerin had a small office.
Raising his hand, he knocked softly.

"Is that you son?" called out a voice.

"Yes, me and Cardella."

"Cardella and I," corrected the Master Baker as he came to open the door and
bring the pair of them into his sanctuary. "So you're the young lady who
wants to formally apprentice to our craft?"

"Hello Master Cogerin. Yes, I am Cardella, and I would love to
formally apprentice to the craft. It has been a dream of mine for
many, many Turns," she replied as they entered his office.

"Helcoger says you have some experience in the craft?" he asked.

"I do," Cardella replied, "When I was 12 my father allowed me to
become a student baker at the Bakercraft Hall. I remained there past
the normal age of 16 when most of the other girls left. I truly
enjoyed my time there and learned most of what the apprentices
learned, but I wasn't permitted to formally be ranked among them."

"I see," Cogerin nodded as he took some notes. "Where there any classes you
really enjoyed?"

"I enjoyed the actual baking classes the most. Cookies, cake, pies and
tarts. I even was given some classes in the more complex pastry arts.
As for the cooking side, I enjoyed all of them, but I preferred
spending my time with my hands in the dough needed for the art of
baking itself," Cardella replied.

"And classes on Hold management?" Cogerin knew that the girls there were
expected to fulfill roles as a Headwoman someday, so they would be expected
to study things such as menu planning, budgeting and managing staff.

"They were alright. I took all those classes. I could easily manage a
hold with all I learned," she replied. It wasn't her favorite part of
the craft. She much preferred actually getting to make things.

"Okay," Cogerin said after a moment. "Here's what I think we should do now.
I'm going to set you a few assessments, some written, some practical and
when you've completed them we'll know where you stand. I strongly suspect
you're at least on a par with some of our senior apprentices, but I won't
know that for certain until you've tried my little tests."

"Fair enough," Cardella replied. "I look forward to the tasks to prove
myself and begin my official training."

"Don't look forward to them too much until you've tried them," warned
Helcoger. "He's tough."

"For you, I had to be," his father told him.

She smiled at the banter between them. It reminded her of her own
father. She wished she could spent more time with him, but their lives
were so different now. She saw her family from time to time, but not
nearly as often as she might have liked.

"I'll be ready, sir. Just tell me when and where and I'll be there,
assuming I'm not training with the wing or fighting Thread at the
time," Cardella replied.

"If you let me have a copy of your schedule, I'll work around it."

"I can do that. I will bring you one right after our meeting here.
That would make things much easier for sure," she replied.
