Zathris

Zathris

He was in his best apprentice tunic. It wasn't much since he was just a
junior, but he wanted to represent the Hall well.
Rohagelen had earned his first liberty and he had gone with a few lads
to the Hold to see how things were. There were so
many things to see! He couldn't stop looking. Stopping to examine an old
vase, he didn't notice when his companions kept
going. Straightening up and turning, he realized he was alone. His mouth
opened and shut. **Oh great.**

"You look a little lost there, son." A smile stretched across the face
of a tall man, reddish-brown hair loose and falling to his shoulders.
Eyebrows arched upward as he glanced at the vase, then at the young
man. "New around here?"

Seeing the face first, he automatically looked at the knots second.
**It's the
Lord Holder** Speechless for a moment, he quickly recovered to use manners
long ingrained. His mother would have been embarrassed elsewise. "Good day
sir. I'm a new apprentice at the Vintner Hall. Rohagelen at your
service." A quick
bow and he straightened.

"Well, nice to meet you Rohagelen." Zathris chuckled at the bow. People
were always so formal around him. When he had first ascended to the
position, he'd tried to get others to do otherwise, but now he didn't
bother. Besides, he had to admit it was a sign of respect and perhaps
he shouldn't dismiss that so readily. "How long have you been here?"

"Oh not long. A few sevendays." He was fresh and he knew it showed. Still,
he was curious. It wasn't everyday that he met a real live Lord Holder
and all.
His father would have a fit when he wrote him.

"Ah, so you're still getting broken in basically." Zathris leaned
forward as if to get a closer look at the young man. "Is this your
first visit to the Hold?"

"It is," he answered readily. He didn't have anything to hide after all.
Then he remembered that he was lost. He hoped he hadn't lost his way
back.

"Have you seen much as of yet?" Zathris motioned around him, though
there was little to see there in the corridor save for a few trinkets
and tapestries used as decorations. "What do you think?"

"Well it's bigger than the cothold for sure," he answered readily.
Rohagelen
tried to think of something else clever to say but he wasn't really that
clever.
He was just a farmboy come to the big Hold.

It did elicit a chuckle from the Lord Holder. "It is indeed. Where are
you from originally?"

"Our cothold is near Baili Hold." That was all he knew to say. It wasn't
like it had a name or anything. They weren't as big as all that. Rohagelen
tried to be prideful to a point but it was hard when doing so in front
of a Lord Holder.

"I've probably passed by it on my visitations." Zathris wondered if
he'd even seen the the boy running around when he was younger. They
didn't stop at every single cothold, but they did pass by many when he
continued on his trips. "Well then, young man, you should probably get
where you're supposed to be. Do you need directions?"

"Oh no. I mean...they told us to get familiar with the Hold. So..I was just
walking around. I don't have to be back for a few candlemarks." Really,
he wanted to get a look at the beasthold.

"All right then. Don't be afraid to ask where things are. Have a good
look, get familiar, but make sure you stay out of trouble." A single
finger joined in that gentle warning with a few wags, but both were
coupled with a grin. Zathris wasn't the sort to get too serious when it
didn't warrant. "If you get hungry, head over to the kitchens. Be
polite and courteous and you might be able to finagle something."

Not knowing what to say to that exactly, he merely nodded. "Yes sir.
I'll be sure to do that." Maybe if he told them the Lord Holder had said
to, they would just hand the bubbly pies over. **Right** "It seems like
a nice Hold and all."

"I happen to think so." Not that Zathris was biased. Not at all.
"Feel free to explore some more. Just stay out of trouble."

"Oh sure. Thanks sir. Or Lord. Or Sir Lord." He shook his head,
realizing he
sounded like an idiot just then. "I'll just go do that exploring."
Smiling a bit
sheepishly, he sketched a bow and took off, eager to get out from under
that
uncomfortable encounter.
