Location: Dragonsfall Weyr
Date: month 6, day 6 of Turn 7
A distinctive humming began to slowly fill the air. The slow rumble it
started with gradually grew in intensity until nobody could miss the sound,
and the knowledge of what was soon to happen.
Onnyth herself confirmed it, }:Today my daughter will choose,:{ she told
Teseada, even as the goldrider was performing a hasty set of ablutions and
scrambling into a gown chosen a sevenday back. }:She will choose well, like
I did.:{
**That's all well and good, but we need to watch all the others too,**
Teseada told her dragon dryly. **And if you could get word to those who need
to know, that would be good.**
}:Hatching!:{ Haloth practically shouted to wake him but he unwound
slowly from the warm body in the bed next to him. "Hey," he said. "The
hatching's started and I have to get ready." He pushed off the bed and
strode into his bathing room and prepared quickly. Donning his best
gather tunic and brushing his trousers he headed off to find Teseada.
"Ready," he asked when the door opened.
"Just about," came the response. "Did Onnyth let you know?"
"Yes," he smiled. "I had everything ready." He opened his arms and
turned slowly. "How do I look."
"You look, good." She studied him for a moment. "Something tells me you too
are planning on making an impression on someone today."
"Maybe," he smiled and waggled an eyebrow. "You look very nice," he
said. "Who are _you_ trying to impress?"
"Depends who is out there," she teased. "But for now, we need to go and show
our faces and greet those hatchlings properly."
He smiled and swept her an elegant bow, then offered his arm. "My
Lady, may I have the pleasure of your company?"
"You may indeed, kind sir," she said as she accepted his arm. "Would you
care to lead the way?"
He turned and led them toward the elevated entrance where the clutch
parents would be on display. Opening the door he ushered her ahead of
him into the bustle of the cavern. News of the gold egg made this
hatching busier than usual and the thrum of the dragons added to the
excited voices made for quite the excitement. He smiled and waved at a
few friends and then turned to the eggs that we rocking madly.
"They're almost here," he smiled proudly.
"I know." A smaller egg, off to Teseada's left began to rock a little more
energetically, as the dragon within tried to make his or her entrance into
the world.
Several of the white robed Candidates turned to watch and with a loud
crack the egg split and though he couldn't see much of the occupant
yet he cheered with the rest of the crowd.
"A fine looking blue," Teseada said, a smile on her face. "Rakelion will do
well with him."
Haloth was already greeting the new hatchling and calling to the new
pair as they were escorted off the sands. Another cheer went up and he
whipped his attention back in time to see a handsome bronze select a
likely boy. "Nice," he clapped and stood for the new bronzerider.
A young girl, looking barely old enough to be on the sands had a huge smile
on her face as a tiny, delicate looking green made her ungainly, yet sure
way towards her. "Look," she nudged N'call.
"That's my sister," he whooped and jumped to his feet having barely
sat down. She looked for a moment in his direction but he could tell
she was still enraptured by her new bond and he sat down with a silly
grin on his face and grabbed Teseada's hand and brought it to his
lips.
"Congratulations," she said, even as a brown hatched and went to a young man
she knew was a journeyman baker. "Is that Helcoger?" she said as the pair
left the sands.
"Oh," he sighed, "Sondrath," he supplied the name Haloth gave him,
"he's handsome." The brown seemed strong and sturdy compared to the
next few blues and greens hatching. Then a sihh came up from the crowd
as the gold egg began to rock. Several young women moved closer.
Teseada could sense that something was about to happen as the remaining
girls gathered at a respectful distance from the egg. There was a slow but
purposeful movement about it, as a crack formed, and a hush spread across
the crowded caverns.
But for one girl there would be more, Teseada knew that as the crack split,
and a golden head and wing emerged. The dragonet surveyed the young women
slowly, trying to see into their characters, and find the one who was her
match. Then, as the egg split, Onnyth informed her. }:My daughter knows,
Lissath has chosen Genna.:{
Those words were true, Teseada could see the look on her face as impression
was made.
"She's beautiful," he smiled at Tes with pride almost as big as
Haloth's. Almost immediately after a tiny green came crying up behind
one of the candidates and butted her head into the girls leg. He knew
that girl, he'd talked to her here in the caverns not that long ago.
"That's Ninaine and look at Luneth, she almost pushed her down. I'm
glad she Impressed."
"Me too, looks like she got a strong minded one to match her," commented the
goldrider, even as another green found her partner. "Is that the girl from
River Bluff?" she asked.
"Yes I think so," he said. "Gelira isn't it? And her father's a
bronzerider?" Then he chuckled, "Charayoth, now that's a mouthful."
"I think she'll manage somehow."
He rose applauding with the rest of the crowd and nodded at the
Weyrleaders as the newly formed gold pair and all her clutchmates left
their hatching sands.
"Ready to greet the new riders?" He cocked his elbow again to escort
her from their seats and follow the line of hungry new baby dragons
out to their first meal.
"I am now," the smile was genuine as she got to her feet and took the
offered arm. "They have produced a beautiful class of weyrlings."
"Oh yes they did," he said. They smiled and waved and shook hands as
they made their way out of the stands.
