Finally, after all those empty chats and the awkwardness with her
mother, Genna spotted the one person she wanted to talk to most.
"Paet!" The young woman practically jumped her friend, before stepping
back to admire her dress. "I'm glad I didn't force you to buy that one
at the market. You look gorgeous!"
Paetri hugged Genna tightly, a bright smile on her face.
"Congratulations! I knew something wonderful would happen for you!
Lissath is beautiful and I can't think of someone more deserving. She
stepped back and looked down at the dress with a slight blush. It
showed more skin than she was used to and clung to the slight curves
that she had. "J'kri picked it out and surprised me with it." She gave
a pleased little smile and ran her hands over the soft material. "I
think I'll let him go shopping more often for me." She had never felt
as lovely as she did at that moment, but her attention went back to
pride for her friend. "So.what do you think of Lissath?"
"Thank you," Genna glowed at the compliment, believing it at once
coming from Paetri. "And you really should, he has quite the eye for
your most flattering qualities," Genna winked at her friend playfully.
"Yes, Lissath. She's got quite the personality already! Very
confident, a bit of a know-it-all, to be honest. But she's so calm and
collected, even on the day of her hatching. She's going to be such an
asset to the Weyr!" Genna grinned, knowing she was babbling, but that
it was easily forgiving in her circumstances.
"Camilth did too, but I'm sure Lissath's personality is a little more
intense." Paetri smiled at the memory. "She was too busy showing off
to the other dragons to really take notice of anything else. She loves
her audiences." Paetri laughed softly at Genna; the girl was almost
bouncing on her toes. "You both will be, I'm sure."
"Any last advice for me before I start as a Weyrling tomorrow?" Genna grinned.
"Sleep!" Paetri laughed. "Get plenty of sleep and go to bed early if
you can. And of course, I'll help with anything you might need, but
don't be afraid to ask J'darin or E'naer for help." She paused,
thinking of what had helped her and her eyes softened. "And make
friends with people who Impressed with you. You'll be around them the
most and they'll understand what you're going through. It's a good
support system."
Genna grinned, nodding at each piece of advice. "I'll be sure to take
that to heart. I already know a few of those who impressed with me,
though it's going to take a bit of time to get to know them all,
there's forty of us! How many pairs were there in your class?"
"It'll be easier once you start your lessons with the dragons. You'll
get to know them all pretty well, I should think." Paetri tucked her
arm into Genna's and began walking to the refreshment table. "Camilth
was from a very small clutch. There were only a few of us. I mainly
spent my time with J'kri." She didn't add that she had been too shy to
really get to know her peers well at the beginning, but she was
getting better. Camilth certainly was getting more forthright about
her flirting. "But some of them might want to get to know you just
because of Lissath."
Genna followed her eagerly, glad to get a little more food in her
stomach. It all looked so delicious, but with everyone wanting a chat
with her she'd hardly had the time to eat so far. "Yeah, Teseada did
warn me about people just wanting to be someone's friend because of
their gold. I hope I can see through motives like that."
Paetri put a pastry on her plate. "Looks like you might be prepared
then. But don't worry. You can come and talk to me any time. Just have
your Lissath call Camilth."
"I will," Genna looked at Paetri gratefully. "I'm so lucky to have you
for a friend."
She gave Genna a quick hug. "You'll make more. Just be careful. The
bronze riders will be eyeing you now."
"I'd like to watch them try," Genna snorted. "I don't intend to get
snared just yet!"
