Genna

Genna shuffled through the line quietly, keen eyes observing all
around her as she piled up food on her plate. She had found candidate
life was busy indeed and often left her feeling hungry. The lessons of
her mother, teaching a lady should never be seen over-eating were
buried deep. Her mother had been wrong about more than one thing. When
she cleared the line, she looked for a place to sit and a shimmer of
gold caught her eye. Was that really a gold firelizard? She couldn't
help but change her path and find a seat next to the brown-haired lady
with her firelizard. "Good evening," she smiled politely.

"Hello," Tavia smiled in welcome. By now she was used to the attention
Glory gained when she decided to show up in the dining hall. It really
was a way for her to meet new people here at Dragonsfall. "I'm Tavia
and this is Glory," she fed the little gold a morsel from her plate.
Glory had surprisingly good table manners when other people were
around.

"Wow, she is beautiful," Genna smiled. "I'm sorry for ogling over her.
I'm from the hold and I've never seen a gold firelizard before. She's
really something. Oh, and my name is Genna."

"Yes, and she knows it too!" The little gold chirped at the girl then
went back to work on her morsel. "Nice to meet you Genna. How long
have you been a candidate?"

"I got here about a month ago," Genna replied. "I still have a lot
to get used to, to be honest, but so far so good. I came here from
Amber Hills Hold." And that was the best thing about the Weyr, to be
honest. It wasn't Amber Hills Hold and her mother was as far away as
possible.

"I'm pretty new here myself," Tavia smiled. "I transferred from
another Weyr just a while ago. But then I was raised in the Weyr. It
must be a bit of a culture shock coming from the Hold."

"It is, but in a good way mostly," Genna nodded. Then she leaned in
and whispered secretively. "I like being able to wear trousers."

"Oh!" Tavia looked down thoughts flashing through her mind. "I hadn't
even thought about that. Though I will say men, even riders, do like a
woman in skirts. I mostly wear them for effect but trousers when I'm
working. Can you imagine trying to mount a dragon or fly Thread in a
skirt? It would be up around your face the moment you hit a
downdraft," she chuckled.

"Well, I can see why the male riders would like that!" Genna chuckled.
"But trousers are practical, yes. And the thought of the fit my mother
would have if she saw me in them makes me giggle." Her eyes twinkled
with humour, even though her words were laced with a tinge of
malicious intent.

"I don't think I've ever seen my mother in trousers," Tavia thought.
"But she's a cook at Dolphin Cove and my father is a Baker. I was
raised in the weyr." Tavia hadn't missed the tinge in the girls voice
but chalked it up to simple teen angst.

"So you got to stand as soon as you turned twelve, right?" Genna asked
curious for a better look into the Weyr's workings.

"I could have," she said. "But I studied healing for a bit first. I
was probably your age when I did though. What are you about sixteen?"

"Just turned seventeen," Genna said with a smile, remembering the
modest birthday party with delight. "What made you decide to stand
anyway?"

Tavia smiled at her own memories. "Oh, I don't really know. It just
seemed like the right time. I mean, I'd always meant to at some
point."

"Well, you must be so glad you did," Genna grinned, before she
swallowed the last bit of her food. "Well, I should probably get back
to the barracks. It was so nice talking to you."

"Oh yes," she responded. "Sawauth is amazing and wonderful." She
lifted her chin with a smile when the girl took her leave. "So young,"
she sighed to herself.
