Description: Ikalis finds Naevyn a snack and invites her to a picnic.
Location: Dolphin Cove Weyr
Date: month 6, day 4 of Turn 7

Ikalis had half a candlemark of a break, and then it was back to the
kitchens to prepare dinner. She was looking for that nice wherhide
jacket she'd seen last sevenday - she had just enough time to grab it
and run it back to her quarters and then back to the kitchens. _If_
she found it...

"Hey," Naevyn popped her head around the door to the kitchen. "Excuse
me, have you got some sandwiches left?" She'd been terribly distracted
with a particular stubborn piece of leather to be made into harnass
and forgot the time completely.

Ikalis recognized the voice and took a moment to compose her face. She
didn't mind delaying her break for Naevyn. "We have a couple wherry
ones." The herd beast ones had already been eaten. "And there's a
little sweet roll left."

"Oh that would be perfect, if it isn't too much trouble," Naevyn said
as a smile lit up her face. Yes, she was learning to be a bit less
shy, even if it came to her slowly.

"Nothing's too much trouble for a nice dragonrider." The greenrider's
smile was really pretty, Ikalis thought. She bustled off to grab the
wherry sandwiches, slipped them onto a plate, and added one of the
sweetrolls. "Here you go!" she chirped when she came back, extending
it to the greenrider.

Naevyn smiled thankfully as she took the plate frmo Ikalis. "Thank
you, you're a lifesaver. I've just been so caught up in strap making!"

"I hear that takes forever," she said sympathetically. "Just regular
maintenance, or did something happen so you need a new set?"

"Well they were starting to show some strain in use, I'm rather safe
than sorry when it comes to my straps," Naevyn shrugged, taking a big
bite of her wherry sandwich. "Mmm.. delicious."

"Thanks." She hadn't prepared the wherry, but she'd baked the bread.
"I totally understand safe over sorry. Sometimes my sister makes me
set aside the really good hide so she can get it first."

"Your sister's a rider?" Naevyn asked in interest, before taking another bite.

"Ikara of green Narith. They're in the Weyrleader's wing." She was
proud of her sister's accomplishments.

"That explains why I don't know her much," Naevyn nodded after swallowing. "Did you ever stand?" She was actually making small talk and it amazed her. But Ikalis wasn't exactly an intimidating person so it figured she was a good place to start.

"Being a dragonrider isn't for me," she said diplomatically. "I can't be an assistant headwoman if I impress, after all."

"That is very true," Naevyn nodded seriously. "That must be so much fun too! Do you aspire to becoming a headwoman one day?"

"I do!" Hazel eyes lit up at the idea. "I'm hoping to really stand out to whoever our new Headwoman is, as a really useful assistant, so she notices me."

"I bet you will, you're always so helpful," Naevyn replied seriously. She remembered Ikali enough to know she was a very pleasant person, so she could say that with confidence.

Now her cheeks did redden a little. "Thanks. Hey, what are you doing this upcoming restday?"

"Uhm, haven't got anything planned yet," Naevyn said after only a moment's of thought. She hardly ever had plans. "Why?"

"There's a picnic in a cove down the beach a half-candlemark away. Some of the Lower Caverns people are having it. You could come if you wanted."

"Oh, that sounds wonderful!" Naevyn said. "Shall we go together?" She wouldn't feel comfortable just walking in, it would be much better with Ikalis at her side. Baby steps.

"I think that would be great. Meet you at the water around the thirteenth candle mark?"

"Perfect," Naevyn smiled before stuffing the last bit of sanwich into her mouth, saving the sweetroll for the way back to her Weyr. "See you then!"
