After her chat with Teseada, Genna had quite a few things to think
about. She had at least a vague idea on what it meant to impress a
gold dragon now. But it left her wondering, why hadn't she had a
similar conversation with a greenrider? She had begun to wonder which
of the greenriders she had come to know might be able to help her with
a talk like the one she'd had with Teseada. Paetri, of course, but she
was a close friend and was only beginning to learn what it was like
being a greenrider. It was when she spotted Tavia again in the Dining
Hall that the answer came to her.
"Hi Tavia, mind if I sit with you again?" she asked brightly as she
approached the greenrider.
"Sure," Tavia smiled up at the candidate. "It's always nicer to eat
with a friend." She'd missed seeing U'kaiah lately. He was never
around and probably busy, and since she wasn't the kind to go around
chasing after him that left her with a lot of extra time on her hands.
Of course it made her just a little bit cranky since she'd moved all
this way so they could be close. But... whatever.
"Thanks, I think so too," Genna pulled up a chair and sat down with
her plate. "Also, there was something I was hoping I could talk to you
about. I've had a chat with Teseada recently, because someone advised
me I should look into what it means to impress a gold, just in case.
It occurred to me I should have a good talk about what it means to be
a greenrider as well."
"Alright," she smiled. "What would you like to know?"
"Well, just basic things mostly. What the best thing about being a
greenrider is, what the worst. That sort of thing. How it changes the
way other people look at you and you at them."
"We'll I'm sure you've been told about your connection to your life
mate," she smiled. "That's really the best part for me. I'm sure I
could go on and on about Sawauth."
"And do you think the connection with a green is different than the
connection with a gold?" Genna asked curiously.
"I don't think so," she said with a smile. "I've flown in the Queen's
wing since weyrlinghood and all the gold riders seem to feel the same
way about their lifemates as I do with Sawauth. But they do have a
much stronger will than a green and a longer memory for sure."
"And what are the benefits of having a green especially?" Genna asked
curiously. Golds were more rare and thus more sought after, but surely
greens had their advantages too?
"Oh yes they do," she smiled. "Only bronzes or a very rare brown chase
gold. "But green," her brows waggled. "They're smaller and easier to
catch. That can be fun all by itself."
"But don't think that's the only thing." Her look turned serious. "In
the queen's wing, it's my job to protect gold dragons. Sawauth has put
us between a clump of thread and a gold wingrider more times than I
can count. We're fast," she nodded. "Faster than anything else in the
sky including Thread. Imagine what it would be like to rider the
fastest runner... times three."
"Wow," Genna hadn't really thought of it like that yet. To her all
dragons had always been super fast and impressive, but it made sense
that the greens were faster. "That's quite impressive to think of. So
there's actually lots of stuff greens are better at?"
"Maybe that's one of the reasons there are so very many greens," she
smiled. At least that twas the way she liked to think about it anyway.
"So either gold or green, you'll have a job important to Pern."
"Exactly," Genna grinned. "Now all I need to do is impress!" Like that
was such an easy trick. Genna just hoped it wouldn't take her too long
to find her lifemate, if she ever found one.
Tavia grinned. "You just stay confident on the Sands and I'm sure you will."
