Genna

Genna

Genna curtsied for what had to be the hundredth time that night as she said
goodbye to another one of her congratulators. She was beginning to lose
track of time completely. As her eyes rested on the next person in line,
she smiled a little more sincere. The rider who'd helped her out with the
boxes, who'd given her the sound advice to go talk to Teseada. How grateful
she was to him now!

"My duty to you and yours, goldrider Genna," P'nal said formally even as
the Wingsecond found himself smiling. The bright grin contrasted hugely
with his dark skin. Hatchings were happy moments and when a gold egg was
Hatched, it was even better. He, like the rest of the Weyr, was eager to
celebrate. There were also other reasons. Junior golds could be caught by
browns and Jodeth was notorious for joining in on those chases so it was
good for him to make that introduction sooner rather than later.

"And my duty to you and yours, brownrider P'nal," Genna positively beamed
with pride at his address. She was a goldrider now. Would that ever get
old? Probably not. "I owe you a great deal of thanks, Sir, for advising me
to go talk with the Weyrwoman Second before the Hatching."

"Oh? Well I am very glad that it helped. Sometimes I get it right." Of
course he was being humble, but P'nal knew this was her moment, not his.
She was inexperienced but she would learn. Lissath picked her for a reason.
"And I trust that now when your little one is sleeping you might be able to
participate in the feast a bit?"

"For as long as I can keep my eyes open, I guess," Genna smiled. The
sleeping dragon in the back of her mind and the emotional day she'd had
made her eyelids feel heavier than she ever remembered.

"Eat as much as you can. You won't be able to leave the barracks for a bit
till she gets comfortable so eat. And then sleep because tomorrow will be
an early day." P'nal remembered that first morning. That was when
everything had changed.

"Eating," Genna grinned. "I'm trying, but there's so many people that want
to talk to me!"

"Your stomach will feel like a bottomless pit for the next few sevendays
because you will feel her hunger." He almost grinned, knowing a gold would
eat more than any other dragonet because they would grow more. "Talk and
eat at the same time. Ever wonder why most of the female dragonriders
always have a meatroll in their hands? You have to keep up your strength.
Food is a large part of that."

"I will keep that in mind," Genna grinned. "You sure are a source of
helpful information, Sir. Are you sure you're not a secret member of the
Weyrlingmaster staff?"

"Never had that duty. Just a Wingsecond." He smiled to himself and nodded.
"Clear skies, weyrling Genna. You will need them."

"And clear skies to you, Sir."
