Genna exhaled, watching her breath form into a puff of white as it
entered the cold evening air. Lissath had gone to sleep early for once
and it seemed like the perfect moment to enjoy a bit of quiet. She
loved Lissath and the hustle and bustle of Weyrlinglife, but every now
and then she found herself craving a moment of silence. It was only
after a few moments that she realized there was someone else out on
the quiet ledge.
"Oh, I'm sorry, Sir, I didn't know anyone else was out there."
There were many times in D'kere's life when he was sure that Kenirath
had made a mistake in choosing him to be the lifemate of a bronze
dragon. D'kere didn't often times feel like the rakish, smooth-talking
bronzerider that people often expected him to be, and so it had always
been. Blessed by birth with blonde hair, blue eyes, and a face that
managed to look ruggedly handsome with a few days facial growth- he
looked the part of the womanizing bronze dragonrider. Sometimes he
used that to his advantage, but more often than not he preferred to
remain quiet and out of the way. Life was more peaceful that way.
It was all of this that brought D'kere out standing on a ledge where
few people often were. He turned at the unexpected sound of the voice,
and immediately he knew who he faced, without looking at her shoulder
knots. A lot of conversation had been made about the golden beauty
that had impressed the golden dragonet.
"The apology is mine, I could be standing on my own ledge."
"It must be a really good ledge then," Genna smiled, her own blue eyes
finding D'kere's. "I'm Genna." She figured he knew who she was, but
she couldn't help but be polite.
The corners of D'kere's mouth lifted into a smile as he extended a
hand to the newest goldrider, "I am D'kere of bronze Kenirath. It is a
pleasure to make your acquaintance. I imagine as Lissath ages you and I
will become even more acquainted." Kenirath never missed an opportunity to
chase a gold.
"Oh yes, possibly," Genna blushed slightly, looking the other way. He
was the first to have voiced that thought so straightforwardly to her
and it unsettled her a bit. But it was the reality. "That's a long way
from now though."
D'kere noted the blush on her cheeks. He had heard that she was
holdbred. "Well, gold and bronzeriders do also do business outside of
flights." He smiled a bit, "And Weyrlinghood passes much faster than
you think in the beginning."
"Oh I bet it flies by," Genna nodded. "It seems that every time I blink
Lissath is a few sizes bigger already." There was something innately
calming about the man, even though he was a bronzerider and that set
off some of her basic alarms.
"Did your family attend the hatching?" D'kere asked. He knew that some
holders were apparently mortified when their children went off to the
Weyr to become a dragonrider.
"They were, my father couldn't make it but my mother and aunt and
uncle were there," Genna nodded, a flicker of uncertainty passing in
her eyes as she mentioned her mother. She still wasn't sure how she'd
felt about her showing up.
D'kere shoved his hands into his pockets, "They must be proud. It is
not every day a girl leaves home and Impresses a Gold dragon."
"Oh yes, it sounds like a Harper's Tale, doesn't it?" Genna smirked
slightly. "Though in the Harper's Tales they never mention how much
dragon dung the girl then has to clean up each day!"
The man tossed back his blonde head and laughed, the corners of his
eyes crinkling, "Very true, Miss Genna. It is hard to make shoveling
dung glamorous no matter what color your dragon is. I always felt the
same way with Kenirath, but don't tell him that, he is pretty sure
that diamonds are mined from his rear."
Genna caught the twinkle in D'kere's blue eyes, her eyes lingering
perhaps a bit too long. He had nice eyes. "Lissath knows for sure it's
pure gold. I'm amazed she hasn't asked me to save it yet."
D'kere smiled, "Don't put it past her, she probably hasn't thought of
it yet." He decided that he liked this young goldrider. He hoped that
she remained as down-to-earth as she was at that moment. As a
bronzerider he hated having to deal with queenriders who felt all of
Pern was their foot stool. "I should probably leave you, now. I am
sure you came out for some peace and quiet and I am interrupting
that."
"But I'm quite liking the interruption," Genna replied, the words out
before she knew it.
The man smiled again. He probably had not smiled so much in a
conversation in a long time, "Well, in that case, at least let me take
you for a walk. I think you still have some time yet before lights
out."
"Oh, that sounds lovely," Genna agreed readily, not really knowing
why. She should be in the barracks, spending time with her fellow
Weyrlings, she knew that. But what was wrong with this? Nothing, she
figured.
D'kere offered Genna his arm as they walked, "So what made you decide
to leave your life at the Hold?" A lot of holders who finally did come
to the Weyr didn't usually find it to their liking since they were so
conservative.
"My mother," Genna replied, before realizing she'd never actually
admitted that out loud before. Well, it was out now. "I can't stand
hypocrites and she's the finest example of hypocrisy you could ever
hope to find."
The man's eyebrows flew up, "Really? In what way?" He asked, now curious.
"She expected me to live up to the highest of standards, but nearly
ruined our family's reputation in chasing after her own whimsy." Genna
shrugged as if shaking off the memory. "But that's all in the past
now. I have a new life here to focus on."
D'kere smiled, "Yes, you do, and I promise it will be more than enough
to keep you busy."
