Picnics

Writers: Avery, Paula
Date Posted: 3rd June 2014

Characters: Ikalis, Ciendra
Description: During the morning baking, Ikalis invites Ciendra on an outing.
Location: Dolphin Cove Weyr
Date: month 7, day 4 of Turn 7

Ikalis was the morning person of her family, so she didn't mind getting assigned to early shifts in the kitchen. Breakfast was actually one of her favorite meals to work on, especially getting all the bread done. She was kneading dough for the bread when she spotted another worker come in. She waved and pushed a strand of hair out of her face. "Good morning!" she called across the bustle.

"Good morning," Ciendra replied cheerfully and went to get an appron and scrub her hands clean. She liked kitchen work and early mornings were best. You get the first taste of freshly baked bread and hot klah. She could work candlemark or two before candidate classes started.

"Excited now Panitath's gone up?" She loved the bustle that happened around Hatchings.

"Yes, that means new clutch for me to try my luck," Ciendra answered. "Do you need help with that?" she asked.

"Sure, could you get the next ball? We could get this done twice as fast."

"Okay," Ciendra replied and dipped her hands to flour so that the dough wouldn't stick to her hands and started working.

"You wouldn't happen to know about the plans for dragonpoker this upcoming restday do you?"

"No, sorry. I don't play dragonpoker," Ciendra replied.

"What do you do for fun, then?"

Ciendra shrugged a bit. "Hang around with other candidates, go watch dragons, walk to the beach."

"Always good choices. Do you ever sneak down the coves and go hunting flit eggs?"

Ciendra shook her head. "No. I'm worried I get lost if I leave Weyr's familiar grounds. The fartherst she had been had been Dolphineering Hall.

"Want to go with me sometime? I've found a few."

"That does sound like fun to do," Ciendra agreed.

"Then we'll have to make a trip of it." It was definitely Ikalis' idea of a good time. She didn't even really have any ulterior motives. Socializing with people her age was good enough for her.

"I look forward to it," Ciendra said.

"What were your mornings like before you were at the Weyr? Did you do this kind of work?"

"Yes, I worked at the Green Valley hold's kitchen. Started working as soon as I was done with the harper lessons," Ciendra answered.

"So this isn't much of a change. But I bet stuff like firestone hauling is. Still, I'm sure you'll be fine." She flashed a disarming smile.

"The candidate classes and dragons are new too," Ciendra said, answering to her smile. "I've enjoyed being here."

"It's got to be a change. The water and all. I couldn't imagine not living by the beach."

"I actually had to take lessons to learn to swim properly. Before coming here, I had only splashed around in river or lake," Ciendra told her.

"But you're safe swimming now, right? I bet swimming in those are different?" Ikalis guessed. "What was Green Valley like?"

Ciendra nodded. "Not as much big waves as in ocean," she said. "Green Valley is beautiful. Surrounded by mountains and hills, lots of green meadows and forests, more herdbeasts you can count."

"That sounds really nice," Ikalis said after a moment. "Like a good place to have picnics."

"Probably. I never had one, at least not in Green Valley," Ciendra said.

"We'll have to make up for that, then. I mean, if you want to."

"That does sound fun," Ciendra replied.

"Excellent, I'll get back to you with a time, or you can let me know when you have a free day." She went back to preparing the next loaf of bread.

"All right, thank's," Ciendra said cheerfully.
