It was just a tart, but Aluka hoped it would mean something to Ninaine. He had swiped it when no one was paying attention once some of the Candidates were done helping the bakers out. He also hoped she would like the pretty cloth he had wrapped it in; he had swiped that a few days ago when he'd been slotted in with the tailors for a couple of hours. He didn't think anyone would really miss it; it was only big enough for a hanky, and unhemmed to boot, but he figured Ninaine would be able to fix that. Nearly every holder girl and their pet feline knew how to do a basic hem. With the tart was a letter, mostly just rambling about how he hoped she and Luneth were doing all right, and how his days had been going.
Now Aluka just needed a way to deliver it all while the tart was still fresh, and he was running out of time to do it. He needed to be at his next chore assignment soon, and that didn't leave him enough minutes to find the weyrling barracks and leave the present at Ninaine's cot. What he needed was to borrow someone's fire-lizard, but he hadn't run into anyone with one so far. At least, not until he turned the corner and saw a woman leaving the infirmary, a beautiful little gold perched on her shoulder. How perfect was that? "'Cuse me, miss," Aluka called. "Got a minute?"
"Sure," said Tavia turning to the candidate with a smile."What can I help you with?"
Aluka held up the little package. "I need to make a delivery to a weyrlin', but I don' have a lotta time to do it," he said. "Could I borrow your li'l friend there? Maybe do ya a favor later in return?" It never hurt to try bribery.
"Well it will depend if Glory knows who you want to give it to," she smiled. "How heavy is it," she reached for the little bundle.
"Not very. It's just paper, a pastry, and a piece of cloth," Aluka said, letting Tavia weigh it in her hand. "It's for Luneth's Ninaine. Average height for a young lady, long wavy brown hair, easy on the eyes." He held the image of the greenrider in his mind, but wasn't sure how to project it to the fire-lizard.
"I know Ninaine and so does Glory," Tavia smiled. Trust a man to describe a women as easy on the eyes. She reached for the small package and gave Glory the appropriate picture. "Do you have a treat for her when she gets back?"
Ah, fardles. "No," the redhead said, and went to take the present back. "I'll find another way. Sorry to waste your time."
"Oh, don't worry." she smiled. "I have some I use for training. She's still young and learning so this will be a good exercise for her." Tavia concentrated again and lifted the little chin. "You know where to go," she said and then tossed the gold flit into the air with the package in her talons. "There," she smiled at the young man. She'll be back in a moment.
Aluka was surprised, but he recovered quickly enough and gave Tavia one of those smiles that made some people think maybe he did have a heart and it wasn't made of chilly stone. "Thank ya," he said sincerely. "I owe ya one, miss. Really."
"Don't worry about it," she answered. "Just remember in the future if you want a flit to do something for you, give it treats."
"I'll remember. If ya need that favor, though, ask 'round for Candidate Aluka."
