Description: The Candidates sneek out to see the Eggs....and almost get away with it.
Location: River Bluff Weyr
Date: month 9, day 4 of Turn 3
Sounji was up working on his needle-work because he too couldn't sleep over the Hatching that was soon to come, he was wondering if _this_
time he'll impress a dragon or not when he too heard the fall. Putting his needle work away he went out to see what had happen when he saw some of the other candidates heading for the kitchens.
Wanting to know what they where all up to walked up to them, "What are you all doing?" he said, and gave them all a look that said he through they where up to no good.
Riveenata tapped Izaronin on the shoulder. "Do you see anyone?" she whispered. "I didn't notice anyone behind us." She was so intensely nervous, but also excited as well, of course.
Izaronin almost jumped out of his skin at Riveenata's touch, but it had the effect of causing him to turn, where he saw yet another Candidate had joined the group. "Shards and shells, Sounji, could you try to make any more noise?" The words were dripping with sarcasm.
"We're going to the kitchens. And trying not to wake up the whole weyr for a midnight snack."
"Oh, so you're the one who made the noise. Now shhhhhh!" Riveenata cautioned. "We're almost there, but any talking now might give us away."
She held a finger to her lips to emphasize.
Bayadrin shook his head. Some of those that had tagged along were still kids. They were definitly going to get caught. there were just too many of them.
"Alright. Quiet everyone now." They were at the hall that led to the store room with the 'secret' passage. All seemed quiet. "Riven, take them in. I'm going to scout and stand guard. If I hear anything, I'll shut the store room door. Stay there until I open it again and give the all clear." As much as he wanted to see the eggs _now_ he knew instinctively that someone should stand guard. And he was likely the best at fast talking. Besides, he'd been caught roaming the kitchens before in the middle of the night. It wouldn't be that odd of an occurance.
"Will do." she told him. Looking to the other candidates, she said "Well, you heard Izaronin. Follow me in and we'll check out the eggs."
She waited a few moments and stepped towards the passage, nimbly fishing a glow from a shielded basket. Once she was confident that the others were behind her, she lead the way into the passage and towards the eggs. Once they were near the crack for observing, she paused and looked back to the others, tucking the glow aside so its light wouldn't be seen on the sands. "Okay, here's the eggs, peek out." she told the others, stepping as far to the side as she could get so that the others could look while still being able to stare out and admire the eggs herself.
Izaronin walked quietly down the hall, trying not to go too far from the door, but also trying not to linger conspicuously in the hall either. His heart was racing, and he tried to breathe slowly to still it. It would be hard to hear with the blood rushing in his ears.
Pausing, he stared down the hall, thinking he heard footsteps coming from the kitchen. He moved back to the storeroom door. He shoved his hands in his pockets and bowed his head sleepily. If anyone appeared, he'd simply start shuffling down to the kitchen, on the pretense of getting a drink. His shoulder was poised to nudge the door closed, quietly. Holding his breath now, he listened for the footsteps again, all of his nerves on edge.
"Excuse me, candidate, but is there some very good reason you are in the storeroom at this hour?" a voice asked from behind the young man.
"Sir!" Izaronin spun and looked sheepishly at the person who had found him. The door fell shut. "I was just exploring, sir. Couldn't sleep."
Bayadrin had dropped form the group before went into the store room. He had made his way into the kitchen. He smiled ashe set to making a heated drink. He listened carefully to what was going on and heard Izaronin speak to someone. He quickly poured to glasses and made his way back to the store room. "Ah Izaronin, I have that drink for you." He feigned suprise to see someone else. "I'm sorry I didn't know anyone else was up, would you like a drink also?"
"Thanks, Bayadrin." He took the glass from his fellow Candidate. 'It looks like you and I weren't the only ones who couldn't sleep." He grinned.
"It would appear so," the bronzerider said as he eyed the two Candidates. They were up to something, or at least knew something more than they were letting on. No one ended up outside the _store_room looking for a drink, and they didn't seem to be young lovers caught out on a clandestine meeting. When he was a candidate, where did he used to sneak off to in the middle of the night... "Perhaps there are other's who cannot sleep. I think I should check on the Eggs just to make sure."
"The Eggs, sir? Are they okay? Wouldn't the dragons sound the alarm if they weren't?" Izaronin looked up at his with wide eyes, not having to feign fear- if something happened to the eggs, and if his potential life mate was there..."They would, wouldn't they? I mean...dragons know everything. They would know if something were wrong....Right?"
"Only if the dragons know there is damage being done," the bronzerider replied with a grave face. He was sure if there were other checking the Eggs no harm would be done, but he didn't want to encourage the behavior either. "Let's just check, shall we?"
Takla was terriffed for a momentm something wrong with the eggs? At his first hatching? HE hoped not.
"In fact, I know a good place we can just take a peek at the eggs from.
It's right this way." M'galec started in the direction of the 'secret' viewing spot.
Izaronin glanced at Bayadrin, then shrugged, mind working frantically.
"Um...okay..." He started to follow M'galec. Yep...they were going to be roasted alive if he didn't think of something.....Lost in thought, he wasn't paying attention to where he was going. Again. Bad habit that....but he flung out his hands to catch is fall. "Ow! Oh...ow..."
His wrist exploded in pain, tears pricked at his eyes.
"Be careful Candidate. These stone halls are slippery." M'galec had been expecting some sort of diversion tactic, if there were indeed others awake and watching the Eggs. He ignored the boys cries of pain, thinking they were just a ruse to divert him from finding the others.
"Sir...I think...I think it's bad..." Already it was swelling, and starting to bruise- as far as he could tell in the semi-dark of the store room. He didn't think it was broken, but he'd never broken anything before.
The bronzerider turned around, fully intending to reproach the boy for purposefully trying to distract him, but he frowned thoughtfully as he saw the familiar look of true pain in Izaronin's eyes. "Let's see it, then." He carefully turned the arm palm down and then palm up. There was a definite injury there. "Can you move your fingers?" he asked in his gentler healer voice.
Izaronin bit down on his lip hard. He tried to move his fingers as he was told...couldn't. He shook his head, not trusting the use of his voice.
"All right then," M'galec sighed. "We'd better get you up to the infirmary. Bayadrin, will you tell the others to get back to the beds while I take him upstairs? Thank you." Candidates being candidates could be understood and serious injury took presidence over catching them in the act.
Bayadrin waited till he was well down the hall before ducking in. He was quick to catch up with the others. "Um guys we best get back to bed.
We've been found out. If we don't want trouble I suggest we all get back to bed before M'galec returns." He motioned everyone out. He wasn't usualy one to get into trouble but knew that they had gotten off lucky.
They owed everything to Izaronin.
