J'ackt

J'ackt

It wasn't hard to recognize Meledei from a distance, even without her
dragon nearby. She seemed distracted and hardly like the upbeat rider
that he had spoken to. Walking quietly up behind her, he tapped her
on the shoulder. "Hey."

Her neck twisted and Meledei offered a small smile to the young man.
"Hey there. Long time no see. Wanna sit?"

He sat, curling his legs underneath him. He simply looked at her for a
long moment, studying her face. "Long day?"

"You could say that." Long day, long sevenday, it was going to be a
long month. In one sense, Meledei didn't feel quite as bad about the
current situation as she had the one with F'gol. Yet, that didn't
mean she wasn't affected by it. "How have you been? I haven't seen
much of you lately."

"Been doing lessons mostly." Jenackt shrugged. He doubted that the
goldrider would like to hear about his other activities. She didn't
strike him as being like Saibra. "Keeping busy. But you're not very
chipper today."

"Yeah, well, evidently I'm a horrible person." The goldrider heaved a
sigh and turned her attention back to the water of the lake as it
shimmered under the setting sun. "T'nom and I broke up. And it
wasn't a nice break up either."

His brows furrowed and his head tilted to the side as he looked at
her. "I've known horrible people. You aren't one. Shards, I usually am
considered one and you're far nicer than I am." He scratched his head,
running his hands through his lengthening hair. "Well, can't really
say much about breaking up. Don't know really much about it."

Meledei flicked her hand dismissively. She didn't even know why she'd
blurted out about her situation. "Doesn't matter. It's over and
done, time to move on. So how are you doing?" It would be better to
focus on him rather than herself and her issues.

"If it didn't matter, you wouldn't have mentioned it." Jenackt replied
easily. "It's troubling you. And obviously you needed to say
something." His eyes watched her, studying her facial expressions.

"Well, I'm trying not to focus energy on it. He's not worth it."
Meledei may not have been an actress, but she was doing her best to
school her features. She did managed a half smile. "Besides, I want
to know how you're doing. Are things getting easier?"

"A bit, yes." He was certain that she didn't want to hear how much his
"private lessons" with Saibra had helped with that. "Not feeling as
overwhelmed, I guess. But still thinking of other options if this
candidacy thing doesn't work out."

"Anything sound viable to you?" There were so many opportunities at
the weyr, Meledei felt certain that Jenackt would find somewhere to
fit in. If not, she supposed he could go back to...well, where ever
he'd come back from.

He arched a brow and Meledei and blinked slowly. "I have been holdless
all of my life. I know how to fight, hunt and stay alive. That's about
it. Doesn't exactly mesh with the Weyr, you know." He then shrugged.
"But, N'vanik seems certain that I'll Impress."

"He does huh? That's good at least." Meledei knew that sometimes
dragonriders and dragons could tell things, even if they weren't
specifically searchriders. Perhaps it came with experience. "So do
you know anything about plants? Like what is edible, what isn't, what
could kill you?"

"Course I do." Jenackt shrugged. "Had to really. But I never tried
snacking on a plant that was unfamiliar. I know the basics of what not
to eat. Plus, I have some classes with Vandor sometimes."

"Classes with Vandor? Really?" Meledei found it difficult to imagine
Jenackt as a healer, but if he was taking classes, maybe it was a
craft the boy might grow interested in. Well, she wouldn't push.
"Well, there are lots of options available and I'm pretty sure you
have a place to stay as long as you want it. So no rush, right?"

He shrugged. "N'vanik said something about teaching Weyrlings and
Candidates to defend themselves. Fight. That sort of thing." He rolled
his shoulders. "It's something I'm good at. Like it most of the time."

"That's something I don't know anything about." Meledei admitted. "But
I've never really had a_need_ to learn how to fight."

Jenackt looked at her with an arched brow. "Not always going to have
that queen right beside you and help if you're attacked may take a bit
to get to you. You should know how to defend yourself if you have to."

"True. I suppose. I just never really thought about it." Meledei
doubted she'd be a very good pupil, to be honest. "So you think I
should take lessons from you?"

He shrugged. "I can teach you the quick and dirty way of defending
yourself, sure, but it's up to you whether or not you want to."

"Well, you did make a good point. I guess it couldn't hurt to learn a
few things." Meledei hoped she'd never have to use any sort defense,
but one never knew. "When are you normally free during the sevendays?"

"The end of the sevenday usually." He paused. "Unless Sh'del thinks of
something else for me to do." Jenackt looked up at her. "And you'll
have to tell Elleth that I'm not actually trying to hurt you. I 'd
really rather not have a queen bearing down on me."

"Oh don't worry. I've had_some_ training you know, I'm not
_completely_ innocent, but I admit I haven't kept up with it since
Weyrling training, and she was fine then. It probably would be good
to have a refresher." Meledei would be certain Elleth knew what was
happening. A gold dragon attacking a young candidate - not a good
thing. Besides, Elleth wasn't usually that testy. For a gold, she
was pretty laid back.

"Then meet in the practice yard at the end of the next sevenday." His
lip corner lifted. "I'll see what you know."
