"Hey D'hol." Meledei called to the man as he drew closer to the table
where she had perched herself. She waved him over, then motioned to
the seat across from her. "Care to cop a squat?" After the
invitation, she grinned to add, "I have extra bubbly pies."
Winding his way through the hall, D'hol stopped at Meledei's call. He
inclined his head and took a seat, his eyes immediately going to the
bubblies. "You know my weakness."
"It's one we both share." Meledei admitted and plucked one of the
bubblies that were piled on a smaller plate to relocate it upon the
edge of D'hol's. "How's it going?"
"Thank you. " He shrugged his shoulders noncommittally. "Things are
going well. Jeyme's pregnancy is progressing without problems and
there are few issues within the wings."
He looked at the bubbly, and decided to let it cool before he sampled
it. "And you?"
"Going okay." Not good. Not great. Okay. It could have been worse -
she could have actually_slept_ with him, given herself so intimately
that as painful as the breakup had been, it would have been even more
so. Meledei was so glad she hadn't committed that far into the
relationship - especially since he'd never had himself. "Trying to
stay up to date with the work, making sure I know my formations and
earn the new ones. That sort of thing."
A brow arched. He of course had already heard the rumors, but
considered them none of his business. "Sounds rather dull." He picked
at the bubbly, testing it's temperature before carefully picking off a
piece of the crust and popping it his mouth.
"Life doesn't stay dull for long in a Weyr." Honestly, Meledei
wouldn't mind some dull time. Things were just too up and down,
especially as of late. First R'enh, then Z'ku, now T'nom. Granted,
she and R'enh had patched things up, but it had still been stressful
and definitely not dull, though not in a good way. "How far along is
Jeyme?"
"True," he agreed. "even if we would like it to from time to time."
D'hol unknowingly echoed her thoughts. He picked up a meatroll, ate a
bite and then a small smile curled his mouth. "She's a couple of
months now. Getting used to the morning sickness and such, but I make
sure my weyrmate is comfortable." He paused, considering her. "You
look tired."
"It's been a long sevenday. Long month." Meledei managed a rueful
grin then coupled it with a shrug. "I'm just moving forward and
trying not to look back." Because dwelling on it wasn't going to do
her or anyone else any good.
"Best thing to do really." D'hol nodded in mild agreement. "Dive into
something else, if possible."
"Yeah. I guess so." Honestly, Meledei wished things had gone
differently, but T'nom had made his choice. He'd have to live with it
- and she'd just have to move on. "So anyway, have you two come up
with any possible names?"
"Jeyme has." He nodded. "Nothing is certain until the child is born."
"Well no, but it it seems like trying to figure out a name for a boy
and for a girl would be kind of fun." Maybe it was different for
guys, but it Meledei imagined she'd have loads of fun when...well,
if...she ever had children.
D'hol shrugged noncommittally. "It is mainly up to Jeyme. She gives
suggestions and I tell her what I like. But honestly, it's her
choice." He looked up at her and gave a brief smile. "You'll find out
someday, I'm sure. Unless you don't want them."
"No, I like kids. I hope to have some some day." Meledei would if she
found the right guy, that ways. At the rate she was going, that would
be the other side of never. "Do you have any guesses as to the
gender?"
"I believe it's a boy." D'hol replied with firm conviction. "But, as
long as the child is healthy, I'll be satisfied." Healthy and
completely his. He tilted his head at her. "If you want a child, stop
taking your teas. It'll happen."
Meledei snorted. "I want one with a life partner, not just to have a
baby. I want a family." D'hol seemed to have a similar thought to most
dragonriders. Well, Meledei wasn't most dragonriders. "And I'm not the
sort to just sleep with someone just to sleep with someone."
D'hol looked at her for a moment and then put his bubbly down. "It's a
good thought, Meledei, but if you'll let me tell you something from
experience?" He crossed his arms on the table. "You'll have many loves
in your life. A life partner for a dragonrider is complicated at best,
impossible at the worst. Riders get injured, sick or they die in
Threadfall. Or they leave for another weyr. Love isn't going to keep
anyone with you."
"If love doesn't keep someone with me, barring death, then it wasn't
true love to begin with." Meledei shook her head. "I've seen it work.
My parents were very much in love. There are other weyrmates who have
been that way for turns and turns, even til death. It may not be
_common_ in the Weyr, but it's not_impossible_."
D'hol had to remind himself of Meledei's age at that moment. "It's not
that black and white, Meledei. Sometimes, it just doesn't work. People
change. Circumstances change. It doesn't mean it's not real love."
"I think we're going to have to agree to disagree." Now that her food
was finished, Meledei stuck a finger in her bubbly and withdraw it. The
tip was covered in sweet goo and she licked it off before lifting the
pastry from the table. "Love,_real_ love doesn't change, even if the
other person changes. If I ever decide to make a commitment, it's going
to be forever. I think the only time I would break that sort of
commitment was if the other person cheated on me. Other than that, I'm
in it for life."
"I think you're setting yourself up for a great deal of
disappointment, Meledei." D'hol's voice was blunt, but attempted to
remain friendly. "Disappointment and a lot of bitterness."
"I'm setting myself up for a relationship that's going to last. I'm
not going to settle." Meledei shrugged. "I'm not saying you have to
see things my way, but that's just how I view them." Obviously most of
the Weyr thought she was nuts, but she didn't care. "As long as you
don't hate bubbly pies. Now that would be cause for concern."
Recognizing the change in subject, he left it alone and instead turned
back to the bubblies on the table. "I think you know better than
that." He picked up his and took a bite, savoring it with relish.
