They would probably never really know what had happened during that flight. After all, it was between the participants, but the results, the results of this.
Before the pass eighteen eggs would have seemed a huge clutch, when he himself stood that time and impressed, there were only fourteen eggs. But now... the Weyrleader shook his head wondering what to do. Ar'lis had no rank other than wingrider, so he couldn't demote him.
What ever he did it was a tricky situation. One part of his punishment would definitely be addressing the Weyrlings, as it was for Lenala. His train of thought was interrupted by a knock at the door though.
"Come!" he called.
Ar'lis entered, his movements stiff, yet resigned.
"Sit down Ar'lis."
He sat down and looked straight at his Weyrleader. It wasn't that easy to do.
"I want to understand what happened," he began. "Because I just do not see how the pair of you could allow it. We're not quite four turns into a pass, and nobody really knows for sure how long it will last. I know the ancient records say fifty turns, but this was not expected. We need riders, shardit!" Uncharacteristically, K'sedel made his point by slamming a fist down on his desk.
Ar'lis winced slightly at the sound, but his eyes grew hard. "Vilarth let Zylarth catch her too quickly, Weyrleader. She didn't fly high or long enough to produce a clutch like Tabanirth's."
"That much is obvious. And for that to have happened something somewhere went wrong, with one or both of you and the control of the flight. Whether or not it was all you, all her or both of you we'll never know."
His jaw tightened slightly. "How could have I lost control? It was _Vilarth_ who let Zylarth catch her when he did. It was her choice. That wasn't my doing."
"Even so, I'm going to have to take action."
Ar'lis bit back a snarly reply and sat very still, his eyes on the Weyrleader. It wouldn't do to argue. Not when K'sedel was already set in his decision....
Scortch him.
"You are restricted to the Weyr, for a period of one month, excluding fall and sweeprides - when you will have a partner who will be aware of that fact. You will also make yourself available to those who cannot care for their own dragons during that time. Is that understood?"
"Yes." But just because he understood didn't mean that his pride didn't bristle at the thought of being treated like an errant weyrling.
"And you will also speak to the weyrlings about this."
He wanted to protest. After all, it was Vilarth who let his dragon catch her much too early. But memories of how violent that coupling had been came back to him, and he swallowed the snarl that demanded escape. As unsure as he was of Lenala, he didn't want to leave her hanging alone. He'd be there beside her in front of all those wide-eyed weyrlings. Still not quite trusting himself to speak, Ar'lis nodded stiffly.
"I am sorry Ar'lis," said K'sedel, his tone softening a little.
He couldn't bear to hear that tone right now. He allowed a brief moment to pass before he asked, "Am I dismissed, Weyrleader?"
"You are."
