Location: Dolphin Cove Weyr
Date: month 7, day 4 of Turn 7

L'pin had been trying to get to know the Candidates outside of class,
as well as in it. Now that Panitath had Clutched, it felt important
that he get a sense of them, build a relationship so that they would
trust him when they became his charges fully. So when class ended, he
motioned at Jenackt.
"Could you stay for a few minutes?"
Jenackt ignored the glances from the other Candidates as he remained
in his seat. What had he done now?
L'pin waited till everyone else was gone before he appropriated a
chair and sat next to Jenackt. "I was wondering how your additional
lessons were going."
Jenackt shrugged. "Keeps me busy. Why?"
"I just wanted to make sure you're receiving the help you need. Is
there anything you're struggling with that you aren't getting enough
help for?"
He frowned, glancing at L'pin. He wasn't used to asking for help, or
people asking him if he needed it. Usually they just left him alone.
He shrugged a bit and scratched the back of his head, wondering if
he'd get another lecture similar to what he'd gotten from Sh'del.
"Reading I guess. It's hard." He hated admitting that.
"I'm an archivist. I could help you with that," he offered. "I know
you've got a lot of extra work already, it must feel like we're
picking on you."
He kept his frown. "An archivist...someone who reads a lot?" At the
next comment, he shrugged again. Sometimes it did, but it didn't seem
to bother anyone but him. "Don't know how. Think reading and I just
don't mesh. I don't understand half of it."
"An archivist cares for records, keeping them updates, helping people
find them and what they need," L'pin explained. "Before I Impressed, I
thought I'd spend forever helping people look things up and sometimes
reading for them. So you see, I'd be able to aid you."
"Oh." Jenackt pushed his hair from his brow. "Don't know how you can
help me. Can't read for me or anything. I'm supposed to do that." He
looked down at the hides and blinked. "Doesn't help that the words
seem to swirl around. And it gives me a headache."
"Have you spoken to a Healer about the headaches? Some people just
have issues with reading. It can be worked on over time. It's not
because they're stupid, or lack education. I've known some
well-studied people with the issue."
"No. They stop a little after I stop reading. Just take breaks. But it
makes it hard. Can't write really good. The words get all messed up."
L'pin pondered that. "Assuming you have time with your other duties,
I'd be happy to give you some instructions in alternate techniques. We
do want our candidates to do their own work and not cheat, but there
are exceptions if they're needed." He'd known a few illiterate
cotholders who had needed the extra aid and still been fine riders.
"Are you excited for this clutch?" he asked idly.
Jenackt frowned. "I don't really have time to do more than I'm already
doing. Barely get enough sleep as it is." He considered the question
and shrugged. "Don't know. Everyone else is, but I'm not holding my
breath for anything."
He didn't want to overload the Candidate, so he paused. "How many
additional duties are you on, at the moment?" Was he perhaps being loaded
with too much?
Jenackt began ticking off his fingers. "There's regular candidate
classes, classes with Vandor, etiquette classes..." That he had no
plans to give up. The type of etiquette he was learning from Saibra
was too enjoyable. " Then there's the catchup reading and writing
classes since I didn't know how when I cam here."
L'pin shook his head. "That's quite a lot. What are you doing with Vandor?"
It was and he often felt overwhelmed. "Learning healing herbs. Just in
case."
"Alright. I won't add anything else to your duties. But if you want to
have your catch-up literacy classes with someone else, you can ask for
me."
Jenackt went quiet as he thought about it. "Maybe. I guess. Wouldn't
be too bad."
"Well, let me know. Go ahead and hurry on now - I'm sorry I've kept
you so long." He was sure tongues would be wagging and he didn't want
to delay if the boy had more work.
