Description: Corowal and Sarban receive worrisome news of people gone missing in
the Barrier Range
Location: Emerald Falls Hold
Date: month 8, day 5 of Turn 7
Notes: Mentioned: Miranek
"We have a problem. You know that big snow that shut down the Pass?
Well turns out there were people
on it. They camped in one of the caves but their supplies are
dwindling by now. Reports from the cothold at
the foot of the trail says they were expected there a sevenday ago.
Never showed up." Sarban's tone was grave
and it was true that this would be a dangerous rescue operation. Not
that they hadn't done the like before.
"Aw, shards, that's not good," Corowal said and ran fingers through his
hair. That pass was one of few that crossed the Eastern Barrier Range
and weather conditions were often harsh there. What came down as water in
Emerald Falls was snow on those mountains. "Do we know who, how
many and exactly where they're trapped?"
"I don't have an exact account. Cotholders on the other side said they
had a party of about nine come through. If it's the same folks...they were
settlers apparently." Sarban didn't have any more information since no one
else had gone up to the Pass since the shutdown.
"And the closest holder is..." Corowal pulled out the map of Emerald Falls'
territory and traced the Pass' route with his finger. "Hircine, at Black
Rock.
Does he have resources to send help?"
"Aye..the miners are probably the best for the job anyway. They climb down
into
the shafts and have all of that equipment. It would just be dealing
with the weather that would be different." That was true enough.
"Before we can try any sort of rescue, we need to locate them first.
Perhaps the
Weyr agrees to help. They could do a sweep on the area. Send for the
Watchrider, please," Corowal said.
Sarban nodded and disappeared, the steward heading to find the current
rider on duty. That would probably speed things up and time was of the
essence for
sure. At the same time, he sent a drum message to Black Rock.
It didn't take long for the watchrider to get a reply. "The Weyr will
send riders. They'll be here shortly."
Coming back, Sarban spoke before he entered. "Dragonriders will come here.
We'll have to give them information and I think someone should go with them
to Black Rock to talk with Hircine." Sarban was all for adventure.
"You're volunteering?" Corowal grinned despite the seriousness of the
situation.
"Well I might as well. Might be good to see about Miranek going too though.
Or
at least a journeyman healer. They might need attention." Indeed, they
could be
in a bad way for certain.
"Let's not risk Master Miranek's neck on an icy mountain slope. I'm sure
journeyman is enough and Hircine should have healer in his hold too. Ask
Zandan if he knows anybody good at this kind of thing," Corowal replied.
"Allright, I'll get ready to go for when the riders get here." He turned to
head out, knowing he would have to change clothes for certain. Turns of
climbing ship ropes had made Sarban an adept climber and he knew all about
knots. Indeed, the steward was probably a better choice than some.
Watching him go, Corowal actually felt stab on envy. His days of
adventuring were past, there was no way a Lord Holder could risk his life
on snowy mountain. "Be careful out there!"
