Description: Genna comes to her mentor with some concerns.
Location: Dragonsfall Weyr
Date: month 7, day 20 of Turn 7
Notes: Mentioned: Ninaine, J'darin
So Ninaine was getting worse. Much worse. Though Genna knew the
Weyrlingmasters knew and figured they were doing everything they could to
help the pair, her hands still itched to do something. She knew Ninaine from
before impression, from back at the Hold even, though it had only been in
passing. Also, being the goldrider in the group, she felt responsible. But
it was clear to her Ninaine despised her for that very reason and talking to
her again would probably only make matters worse.
Genna was torn and finally she decided to seek some expert advice. So,
sometime after dinner, with Lissath firmly tucked into her wallow for once,
she knocked on the door to Teseada's office, hoping she was in.
"Come in!"
Genna shuffled into the room, seeking Teseada's eyes with a polite smile.
"Hello Ma'am, I was hoping we could have one of our little chats again. Is
now a good time?"
"Of course it is," Teseada gestured to a seat. "And please, we're goldriders
together, it's Teseada like this. Forget the formalities and speak plainly."
But it was clear that while formalities might be excused, the courtesies
were not, as Teseada got up to join her around the other side of her desk,
and produced a small tin in which she kept her sweet treats, which she
opened and offered the weyrling.
"Thank you," Genna smiled, taking the seat gladly. She took one of the
sweets, but didn't yet pop it into her mouth. "I take it you heard about my
classmate Ninaine and her green?" she asked a bit cautiously.
"A little," well to be honest she had heard a fair bit from the rumour
mill,
but that was likely to have a high degree of exaggeration about it. "I
heard she's not adjusting well."
"That might be a bit of an understatement," Genna sighed, her blue eyes
suddenly looking a bit nervous. "I want to help her, somehow, but I'm stuck
on ways how. She doesn't like me much, we never got along before we
impressed and me impressing Lissath didn't really help."
"Do you think she's a little jealous of what might have been?" asked
Teseada. No rider would reject their dragon, thery were always a perfect
match, but people always wondered what would have happened if things had
gone differently.
"I don't know if jealous is the right word," Genna said after a moment of
hesitation. "I know she was confident she would either impress gold or not
at all. That she didn't and someone she didn't like did.. well, that must
have hurt. Especially with her parents being.. well, jerks."
"Jerk is rather a polite word," Teseada said with a grimace. She'd had her
own run in with them on what should have been the best day of their
daughter's life. "I understand Luneth is very clingy and protective?"
"Very. She even bit the Weyrlingmaster when he tried to separate them, is
what I heard." It still felt a bit like taddling. Then again, nothing she
was saying wasn't already public knowledge, right?
"I'm sure J'darin will be talking to her, and working with the pair of
them," Teseada was thinking aloud as she mused the problem over. "Do you
think it would help to have her talk to me at all?" Goldriders had to make
decisions about things that could impact on the lives and careers of other
riders, this question was a way to see how Lissath's rider thought.
"It might, but I think.. I think she needs someone who understands what
she's going through. And neither of us could ever really understand, right?"
Genna was thinking out loud as an idea was slowly taking shape in her mind.
"Wasn't there someone in your weyrling class, a greenrider who had hoped to
impress Onnyth? A hold girl who used to be horrified of what the Weyr is
like?"
"Hmmm.. " Teseada liked the sound of that. "Zeria maybe, she was born at
Opal Cove, a Tanner's daughter. It was a huge shock for her coming here, and
she had her heart set on impressing well, and it took her a sevenday or so
to realise that she had."
"A sevenday?" Genna asked a little uncertainly. It was taking Ninaine over
several sevendays already. "Well, she's the closest anyone will get to
understanding, I guess. Do you think maybe you could ask her for a favour?"
"I'll do that," Teseada said. "But what about something a little more
subtle, if we send her straight out to talk to Ninaine, she's going to know
that she was sent there. But we could arrange for her to be a guest
lecturer, and see if she can draw Ninaine out a little that way. It'd look
less planned."
"Oh, that is so much better!" Genna smiled a little wider now. "I bet the
Weyrlingmaster would like the idea too. Do you want to approach him about
it, or do you want me to do it?"
"I think, that seeing it was your idea, you should speak to J'darin about
it, and I'll speak to Zeria as a friend and make sure she's all right with
the idea."
"Thank you," Genna felt herself glow a little with pride. This was what
being a goldrider was about, right? Stepping up and figuring out how to make
things better for everyone. Or for someone in particular. Oh surely, this
should work! "I'll go talk to him right after class tomorrow."
Teseada nodded, "And I'll catch Zeria later. Lets hope we can help Ninaine."
"I hope so too," Genna nodded. "Thanks. Sometimes just thinking out loud
helps, it seems."
"It does, just try not to do it when you have to lead a wing meeting,"
joked Teseada. "You might get a few funny looks."
"Am I lucky that is still some decades away at best," Genna said with a
wink, before pushing back her chair. "I'd best be going. Shall I tell
J'darin that you'll ask Zeria to swing by his office if she wants to do it?"
"Don't be so sure on that," said Teseada in reply to the first part of
Genna's words. "That's what I thought too, and now look at me. But yes,
please tell J'darin that she'll have her green speak to Hasaarth and arrange
a time to come and talk to him about it."
"Will do," Genna nodded, getting up from the chair and moving to the door.
"See you soon!"
