L'cor

L'cor

When he got the message to find the greenrider to help him go on Search. L'cor
was excited. He didn't have any illusions that he was going to do anything more
than stand around at watch. But Tonuth was large and fully grown now. To be
selected for this job was an honor and he knew it.

So, he sought out the greenrider. He was a little surprised when he saw
Evielenth. She was horribly scarred yet her gaze was as alive as any dragons.

}:Hello lovely:{ the young bronze nuzzled the green in an unschooled attempt at
a flirt.

L'cor chuckled and knocked. "Hello?"

"L'cor. Don't come in - I'll come out." R'haran picked up his jacket and left
his ground level weyr to join the young bronzerider in the sandy Bowl. "We
haven't spoken before; I'm R'haran and I see Tonuth has introduced himself to
Evielenth."

He waited outside like instructed and watched Tonuth try to charm Evielenth.
"He's still learning," L'cor chuckled when R'haran appeared.

"Nothing wrong with that. I actually wanted to spend a bit of time with you,
going over us travelling together. Evie's flying isn't great so we have a bit of
technique - very little altitude and then we go /between/." It wasn't ideal and
certainly not the sort of thing a weyrling should emulate. Probably not even a
wingrider, either. "So there won't be any tricky formation landings or
take-offs, or anything like that."

L'cor nodded as he talked. "Yes sir," he said respectfully. "I can follow your
lead and if you want we can fly below you so Tonuth can catch if necessary."

"Thank you for the offer but it won't be necessary. We're well used to flying
the way we have to - we've had over seven Turns at it." He had an exceptional
memory anyway, but some events seemed to have branded themselves upon it so he
never lost count of how long ago they occurred; Evie's scoring was one of those
moments.

"Seven turns? But..." L'cor was confused. Everyone knew they were in the seventh
turn after the beginning of Threadfall. "Did this happen in the first fall? I
knew it was bad but..."

"Evie was scored eleven months before the first Fall of the Pass." R'haran's
emotions were mixed; it was a relief that they were finally at a stage where not
everybody knew his history but somewhat embarrassing to have to explain himself.
In hindsight his decision-making seemed less-than-brilliant and the chance that
had led them to arrive in time for a Fall about which they knew less than
nothing about facing seemed unlucky in the extreme. At the time it had been
essential that news of his and Evie's scoring had been spread to every Weyrhold
and dragonrider, but as time had gone on he had been pleased to lose his role as
the 'proof' that Thread was returning. "We jumped forward in time to see if what
we were starting to suspect was true - and right into Threadfall."

"Wait," L'cor was astonished. "You timed it? But... but I thought only metallic
riders knew about that." His mind shifted to the green and her horrible
injuries. He shook his head. "How remarkably brave R'haran." He looked at the
other rider with the deepest respect.

"Remarkably unlucky, but thank you. As to why I knew - it's in the records. I
was apprenticed as a harper because I remember everything I read and then, with
the queens suddenly rising more often and clutching what we thought were huge
clutches we were all pouring over the Weyrhold records even as we were opening
the old Weyrs almost every Turn." R'haran grinned, his blue eyes alight with
amusement. "Ancient history from your point of view but certainly an interesting
time."

The younger man grinned at R'haran and shrugged. "I love to study records too,"
he said. "But you remember _everything_ you read?" L'cor was amazed.

"I do, but it's not a skill I've developed," R'haran protested. Skills had value
and represented dedication and work. His memory didn't deserve to be regarded as
such. "It's just something I was born with, like being able to see or hear."

"But it's still pretty rare," L'cor nodded. "Well," he said rubbing his hands
together. "Do you want to do any test flying just so Tonuth can get used to
flying with Evie?" He didn't want to assume anything would happen quickly but he
did want to make sure they could do what was needed when the time came.

"That's exactly what I would like to do. Although we can't fly in formation it
wouldn't do to arrive like a shower of firestone from a broken sack.
Representing dragonriders and the Weyr, and all that." R'haran shrugged into his
flying jacket. "You wait here and watch us take off, go /between/, return, and
land so you can get some idea of how we fly, then we'll have a talk about what
might work when arriving and leaving a Hold."

"Yes," he smiled and nodded. "That sounds like a great idea."
