Description: Ikalis gives Meledei a treat and they exchange some news.
Location: Dolphin Cove Weyr
Date: month 7, day 25 of Turn 7
**Find Meledei,** Ikalis told Wavecrest, concentrating on the image of the
goldrider.
The blue flit peeped and blinked/between/, seeking the person he'd been
told to find. It took him a few tries, but that person looked right. He
landed in front of her and presented his leg, which had a note tied to it.
"Well hello there." Meledei always greeted firelizards when they arrived.
She also
had a habit of storing treats for them, usually dried meat since that
didn't go bad
so quickly. She crossed the room to tug open a small drawer and tear off
a good
chuck of said meat then offered it to the firelizard after she procured
the little
message. At the words written upon the parchment, her eyes lit up, and she
immediately scooted to her door and out of her weyr.
A few moments later, Meledei emerged from the hallway and into the
kitchen. Her
eyes sought out a familiar form, then held on as she passed by several
other kitchen
workers to approach Ikalis. "A little firelizard told me there were bubblies
waiting for me."
"Oh good, he remembered what he was doing." Ikalis knew the blue
firelizard wasn't always the brightest. "I did save you a bubbly. Only
one, I'm afraid - the rest somehow already wandered off. I had to tell
Nerit it was for you before she let me keep it."
She reached behind a a row of jars filled with spices and pulled out a
wrapped treat. "This is for you."
"One?" Meledei whined and wrung her hands while her feet tapped out a little
impatient ditty upon the floor. She immediately straightened up and
grinned at
Ikalis to indicate that she hadn't been serious. "Well, one is better
than none.
Have I ever told you that you're my favourite caverns worker?" She hopped
onto a
counter and accepted the bubbly.
Ikalis laughed as she handed it over. "Believe me, I appreciate it."
As she bit into the tangy sweetness with the flaky crust, Meledei allowed
her legs
to swing back and forth and her heels lightly tapped a rhythm against the
cabinet
doors beneath her. "So." She asked once she had chewed and swallowed.
"What's up
with you lately?"
"I'm assistant to the Weyrwoman while she's on bedrest," Ikalis said with
a broad smile. "I'm learning some really interesting things about the
running of the Weyr. I'm sure you know all about them, but folks like me
don't always hear about these things till they're happening."
"Well I knew about the assistant thing." It wasn't the juiciest
gossip, but that sort of information wasn't secret, either. Meledei
devoured a second bite of the bubbly before she asked, "So tell me the
sort of things you've learned about the Weyr."
"The technicians upgrade project is going to be very cool. They
haven't found the right master yet, but when they do, we're going to
have a little colony of them working."
"It should be interesting. It's probably a really long term project
though. I don't know how these things work but it seems like a really
difficult task they have ahead of them." The Technician's craft had
never interested her, but Meledei had to admit that it was fascinating
in its own way. She had no aptitude for such things, though, and just
left it to those better educated in that sort of thing. "I bet it
will be messy around here for a while too."
"Oh, it's going to be an absolute nightmare. If that means more
advances for the kitchens, I'm all for that. Though I bet riders are
hoping for the weyrs to be a little more comfortable. Me, I'm looking
forward to electric lights eventually."
"That will be nice. Though there's something about glows. I think
I'll probably keep them on hand. Just cause." They could provide
different levels of light and sometimes Meledei wouldn't necessarily
want everything to be as bright as day. "I forgot how long they
projected it to take."
"Depends on where they do first. When the Master comes in, I'm going
to figure out how to listen in on some of the meetings." Ikalis just
needed to_know_ things.
"You could volunteer to assist maybe? Though I'd check with the Headwoman
about
that before actually doing so." Meledei knew that she wouldn't like it if
someone
just randomly assigned themselves somewhere else when she needed them in a
different
place.
"That's true. It would be interesting to know about, though." Ikalis
pondered if she'd heard anything else of interest. "I don't know much
about wing gossip. I thought I'd hear a bit more of that."
"You just have to be in the right place at the right time." Meledei
actually tried
to refrain from gossiping. She confided in to those she felt like hse
could trust
not to go blabbing things all over the Weyr, but as a general rule, she
tried not to
do it in public. She wasn't perfect, but she made an effort.
"We'll see." She sighed. "I'm hoping to have a party before Panitath's
clutch hatches," she added after a bit. "A fun kick for the candidates
before they Impress and can't do things. Maybe a picnic down at the
beach?"
"Oh they'll love you for that!" Who couldn't resist a party? Well, maybe
someone
who was very introverted or shy. "Do I get to come? Or is it candidates
only?"
"I'd love for you to come along. Maybe it'll be a big event, get
everyone's spirits up."
"People generally love parties around here." There were often little
impromptu ones
scattered here and there, friends just getting together. In a Weyr as
large as
Dolphin Cove, that wasn't unusual. Meledei generally 'put together' one
every time
she had to leave for a gold flight that wasn't Elleth's.
"And with the changeovers that have been happening, I hope it'll help.
Nothing like the pre-Hatching and then the Hatching to get everyone
smiling again."
"Hatchings are always a happy occasion." Unless someone got mauled by a
hatchling,
which had happened from time to time. That sort of set a cloud over
things, but not
enough to dampen them too much. Meledei always hoped that nothing like
that would
happen, especially for one of Elleth's clutches. "So, no more bubblies
hidden for
me?"
"Nope. But I'll have something nice for you at the party, eh?"
Meledei hopped off the counter and grinned. "I look forward to it."
