"That man is insufferable. How he ever impressed a _bronze_ is beyond me,"
M'galec growled as he pulled his tunic angrily over his head.
Lenala took the tunic from his hands before he could drop it on the floor, smoothing the wrinkles out of it. "What happened, M'galec?"
He sighed as he removed his trousers and grabbed a towel. "Perhaps I should not talk about it. I do not want to upset you, love."
She picked up his trousers as well, tossing both of them over the back of a chair before following him towards the bathing chamber. "It went badly, didn't it? I knew it would, M'galec... they're going to make me do it..."
M'galec stopped and turned to face her. "No, they will not, Lenala. I promise you that. This is not over yet." He slipped through the curtain, still mentally cursing the Weyrleader for his thoughtlessness.
"But--" Lenala followed him, frowning. "M'galec, you _can't_ fight with the Weyrleader!"
"I already did, love." He groaned as he sank himself deep into the waters of the bathing pool.
"M'galec!" Lenala stared down at him, torn between pleasure that he'd done such a thing for her and fear of what sort of trouble he'd ended up in. "Are you in trouble?"
"Me? No. Why would I be in trouble? Not even K'sedel would dare punish me for speaking sense." He reached for the sweetsand and began rubbing it into his tired muscles.
"But..." Lenala couldn't _imagine_ standing up to Tsaera. Shards, she'd not even managed to say anything when she'd gotten demoted. "What if he's angry?"
"Oh, I can tell you now, he _is_ angry." M'galec at least had _that_
satisfaction from the meeting. "But I am not wrong. And he will soon see that."
"You can't make him angry," Lenala protested. "What if he decides to demote you. Or _transfer_ you!" He turned around and dipped his body in the water to rise the sand off. "Do not worry, love. He cannot touch me. I am too valuable in the infirmary to transfer out over this, and I do not give a shard if he demotes me. He cannot take away Dwarkanath, he cannot take away my knots, and he cannot take away _you_. That is all that matters."
"Are you _sure_?" she demanded, picking up his towel and waiting for him. As much as the idea of him standing up to the Weyrleader terrified her, there was something wonderfully exciting about it as well. No one had ever cared enough about her to risk so much. "I don't know what I'd do without you, M'galec."
"I _am_ sure, Lenala," he said confidently as he dragged himself out of the nice warm water. "I am not afraid of an ignorant Weyrleader who would not know sense if it bit him in the arse. Pardon my language."
Lenala wrapped first the towel and then herself around M'galec, not caring that he was dripping wet and likely to soak her nightgown clear through.
"You did all of this for me?"
"Of course I did, my love," he said, entwining his wet fingers in her thick dark hair. "And I will do more. I will see to it that you will not do anything you are not ready to do. I swear you will not." He kissed the top of her head gently and pulled her to him protectively. _No_ one was going to harm _his_ weyrmate!
Lenala forgot about the towel, twining her arms around his neck and pulling him down for a long, desperate kiss. He was her romance story hero, who would sweep her off her feet and keep her safe from everyone else. And she was the heroine who needed his wisdom, protection and guidance.
Without him, she would be lost, and she was what made his life worth living.
So they did what any good romantic duo would do. They forgot the towel completely, and with her in the bastion of his manly arms and with him placed on her highest pedestal, they melted into the floor and each other.
