Tavia

Tavia

Aileyan came slowly back to her senses from a fellis-sleep. Her head
felt croggy. The first thing she noticed was the absence of pain. Next
was Kjarliheth's jubilant: }: You're wake! :{ and the warmth of a
firelizard curled against her cheek. She was laying on her back on a
infirmary cot.

She remembered the pain that had hit her during the Fall and her hand
crept to her stomach. She felt a bandage. Now that she really thought
about it, she realized she had had stomach pains for some time now.
But she had been so upset with U'kaiah's decision that she had ignored
her body's signals. Aileyan remembered being rushed to the infirmary,
remembered Taren pressing around her stomach until he found the spot
where it hurt most (the shot of pain almost made her pass out). Then
she had beem given fellis.

She heard foot steps and turned her head. Taren walked into her field
of visions, holding hides. "Back with us again? Good. That was a close
thing."

"What happened to me? What was it?" Aileyan asked.

"You had an ex-utero pregnancy and it had ruptured your fallopian
tube, causing internal bleeding and infection," Taren explained.

Seeing the non comprehensive look on her face, switched to more
simpler terms. "You were pregnant, but instead of your womb, the
embryo had attached to the tube that leads from ovaries to your womb.
When it grew larger, it ruptured the tube. You've been slowly bleeding
to your abdominal cavity for Faranth know's how long. The Fall made
the bleeding worse. I had to remove fallopian tube and ovary just to
stop the bleeding. It could have killed you. Actually, we almost lost
you on the surgery table," Taren's voice was serious.

But only the words "you were pregnant" really registered and their
meaning...she had been pregnant, to U'kaiah and now she wasn't. She
burst to cry. She had so wanted to have U'kaiah's baby.

"Oh, Faranth," Taren swore. "TAVIA!" he called. It was post-Fall and
he just didn't have time for crying greenriders.

She had known of course, not that Aileyan was pregnant in advance but
that she'd lost not only the baby but an ovary as well. Surgery of
that kind was very rare but in this case the Master had made the
decision to try and save the greenrider and by proxy her dragon.

As strange as it might seem she felt closer to Aileyan to just about
anyone else in the Weyr. So she was waiting outside as Taren told her
what had happened and whipped through the curtains the moment he
called her name.

She went straight to the bed and grabbed Aileyan's hand then nodded at
the healer. She could handle this. She was good at helping patients
through their pain and loss. "Shh shh," she said with an arm around
the other greenrider. "I know," she added realizing the comforting
sounds were the same she'd make for Kaiavin but what she said didn't
matter as much as the comforting.

"I so much wanted that baby," Aileyan sobbed with muffled voice.

Taren looked her with compassion and then steeled his heart. If he
cared too much, he couldn't function.

"She's still under effect of fellis and will need a new dose when it
wears off. Be careful with the dosage, she's small," he instructed
Tavia with brusque voice. "If there's complications, call me, I'll be
checking the other patients."

"Yes Sir," Tavia nodded and turned back to Aileyan to continue trying
to calm her down. "I'm sorry," she said softly.

"Why?" Aileyan sobbed against Tavia's chest.

Taren gave them one more look before moving to check next patient.

"Honey," Tavia just cradled Aileyan and rocked back and forth. "You're
going to be alright and you can have more babies." She knew how aweful
she'd feel in the same place. She'd even been thinking about having
another baby with U'kaiah herself. Honestly she felt sorry for both of
them. "I'm so sorry," she murmured.

"With one ovary left and scars at her uterus? Not very likely," Taren
muttered to himself, he had overheard Tavia's words. No, the girl's
changes of getting pregnant had just been reduced to half. Still, he
understood why Tavia wanted to keep her hopes up.

Aileyan felt odd comforted by Tavia's presence.

"We'll get through this, I promise we will," Tavia made the promise to
herself as much as Aileyan."
