"I have no idea why we don't do this more often." Harki lay on her stomach,
her bare backside exposed to the hot sun and her front protected from
scorching sand by a thin bit of brightly dyed cloth. It was earlier in the
day here, maybe around noon, and there was barely a breeze to ruffle the
impenitrable greenery that lined the beach. "Seriously." The greenrider
sighed. "This right here? This is bliss."

Rorela laid on her back, similarly unclothed and similarly in a state of
bliss. She made a murmur of agreement. "We should do it more often. I think
I was getting so pale that I glowed at night." She wiggled against her own
bit of cloth and sighed. "It almost makes me wish I was at Dolphin Cove.
They have sun like this all the time."

"Mmm... sort of. It also gets sickeningly hot. I like it when it cools off
at night." The greenrider smiled. "And while it's fun once and a while,
overly sweaty sex just isn't my go-to evening."

Rorela opened her eyes and turned her head to the side before flipping over
on her stomach. "Speaking of sweaty sex, what did you think of Ma'din?" She
wriggled her brows.

"Scorch him." Harki rubbed her hands over her face. "That boy has stamina.
And is creative. I was unmentionably sore after leaving his weyr. How did I
not know about him earlier?"

"Well, he's a bit of a well kept secret. He's an ass most of the time, so
unless you like the bad boy type, like me, or unless you get him in flights,
most people don't know." Rorela grinned. "And he's not the type to weyrmate
either. No strings type of guy, which I happen to like."

Harki grinned at that. "I read him the rules, you know."

Rorela burst into laughter. "You gave him rules? Good thing they were in
line with what he wanted, or he'd have broken them the first chance he got."

The greenrider shrugged. "Sure, but isn't that the point of rules? Know
them, know the consequences, make your own decisions after that? And really,
have I ever been good with rules either? Maybe they're more like
guidelines."

"Not really." She agreed, then stretched. "Well, I'm glad you had a good
time. Faranth knows you needed it."

"Thanks for sharing!" Harki said brightly. "The downside is that now you
have to share."

"Well, he's not mine. I just use him on occasion." She grinned. "And we
should always give to the less fortunate."

Harki made a face and threw a handful of sand at Rorela. "Jerk."

"Hey!" Rorela quickly brushed the sand off of her abdomen. "At least you
had a good time." There was a bit of a pause. "So...any new gossip?"

"Not much." The greenrider wriggled onto her back and stretched her arms
above her head, luxuriating in the heat after the chill of drills. "I did
notice that the new Weyrwoman sure didn't take long to shack up with G'nir.
How do you feel about that?"

Rorela's lips turned downward. "What am I supposed to say? I expected it.
G'nir's not going to look at me like that. Shells, no one really does. I'm
the good time gal, remember?"

"Aw, don't say it like that." Harki turned on her side so she could look at
her friend. "I think I said that wrong. I know he's the Weyrleader, she's
the new Weyrwoman who wants to ensure that she has a smooth transition. I
guess I was really asking if you were okay."

She shrugged in response. "I don't have much choice to be otherwise. I mean,
I work with him every day. Upinth doesn't have a shiny hide, so unless he's
really depressed...or drunk...he's really not going to give me the time of
day, personally."

Harki sighed. Rorela was right-- a golden hide dazzled the senses. Even the
most sensible of men turned into idiots when goldriders were around.
Goldriders were _special_, even when they didn't deserve to be. And worse,
Saibra was _pretty_. "Anything I can do?"

"Nah." Rorela sighed and laid back. "It's not like my bed is empty." She
closed her eyes. "I'm not the 'fall desperately in love' sort, so that's all
I really need."

"Well, if it'll make you feel better, I heard this totally nuts rumor
about Saibra."

That made her turn to look at Harki. Saibra wasn't a bad sort,
honestly, but she loved gossip. "Do tell."

"Well." Harki grinned. There was nothing better than sharing something
ridiculous... that might have a kernel of truth. "_I_ heard that
Saibra sleeps with all the Candidates at least once before the
Hatching. The boys, anyway."

"Really?" Rorela sat up at that. "You've got to be kidding me...." She
considered it and tilted her head back to laugh. "Maybe she likes to
make sure they're up to par...so to speak."

"Get 'em while they're really, really young?" Harki chuckled a bit.
"Could you imagine J'darin's face if she tried that at Dragonsfall?"

"Hopefully not too young." Rorela wrinkled her nose. "She might just
like breaking them in. That might be her thing, you know. Well, I
prefer experience, myself." She tapped on her chin in thought, then
snickered. "J'darin would probably foam at the mouth a bit. I heard
that they're not too friendly."

"Really? What, did she make a pass at him?" Harki smiled at the thought.
"J'darin is _so_ weyrmated."

"Dunno. Some drudge said that she heard quite a bit of yelling outside of
her office when J'darin went in there." She stroked her chin. "I wonder what
it was all about."

"Maybe he caught her making a pass at a Candidate?" Harki suggested, feeling
a little wicked.

Having met Saibra just the once, Rorela couldn't really say. The woman
seemed upbeat and fun to be around. "I don't know. I did talk to her,
actually. I went to check on G'nir and she answered the door. We went and
got some drinks. She seems like the fun sort." Rorela frowned a bit, but
couldn't hide a grin. "Well, someone's gotta break them in."

She shrugged. "Maybe. It's just really odd, _if_ it's true. And she's
certainly different than Hygalia, I'll give her that."

"Hygalia was so proper it made my teeth hurt." Rorela sighed. "Saibra's like
her complete opposite." She shifted, then flipped over on to her stomach
with a pout. "Well, we've gotten you all sexed up. We got Paetri all hooked
up with her man. What do we do now?"

"Umm... go surfing?" Harki asked hopefully.

Rolling her eyes, Rorela huffed. "I wasn't talking about right now, at
this very moment." She pointed a finger. "You know what I meant. I
need a project."

"You and your projects." Harki huffed and flopped onto her back.
Surfing was so much more fun... "I talked to Talwynn the other day.
She hit me up for advice on who might be unattached... any
suggestions?"

"Hmm...Talwynn..."Rorela's brow furrowed. " Definitely not Ma'din. "
She cut her eyes to the side. "P'nal?" She immediately covered her head.

Harki glared at Rorela. "That's right. Cower. But I'm going to drown
you when we go back in the water." He might have turned her down,
but... just, no.

She slowly lowered her hands and then flashed a grin. "It was an idea!
Besides, most of the good ones are taken!"

"I don't think she's looking for good, just available." And wouldn't
mind her scars, or at least wouldn't look too hard at them.

"Well, she'll want good, if she wants some itches scratched." Rorela
tapped her chin. "What kind of guy does she like?"

The greenrider shrugged. "I dunno. She's kind of... shy about her
Threadscore, so maybe someone who will put in a little effort. Dinner,
drinks... that sort of thing. And someone who isn't chased off by how
blunt she is."

"Lots of riders have threadscore." Rorela brushed it off. "And some
men like that sort of thing. I shall have to look around and do some
research." Excited now by the prospect of hooking someone else up,
Rorela bounced on her bottom.

"Please do." That was one job that Harki was pleased to pass off to someone
else. Throwing firestone sacks on the sly with Tal was more her style.

"I will." Rorela beamed. She had another project. She loved them; it took
her mind off of other, more personal things. "Now...about surfing."

"Woo!" Harki was up and running across the hot sand with her wooden
surfboard under one arm almost before Rorela had finished speaking.
Gossip was one thing, but playing in the waves was somethng else
entirely.
